Here is your answer from the official website of the Insurance Bureau of Canada:
"Visitors to Canada
If you are visiting Canada from the USA, you should obtain a Canadian
Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card
from your insurance company before you leave home. This yellow card
shows that the visitor's insurance company agrees to provide at least
the minimum legal coverage requirement wherever you travel in Canada,
and that it has filed the necessary "power of attorney and
undertaking" with the Canadian authorities.
"If you are a newcomer to Canada, or plan to buy a vehicle in Canada
to use while you are travelling here, be sure to bring with you
written evidence from your own insurance agent or company of your
driving experience during the past five years. This may help to reduce
your insurance premiums. An authenticated translation may be required
if your document is not in English or French."
If you plan to rent a vehicle, you will normally receive all the
required insurance protection with the rental agreement."

I have obtained such a card from my auto insurance company when I have
vacationed in Canada. A simple phone call to your insurance company
or agent will do the trick. They will be familiar with the requirement
and send you the necessary card.
