A very high rating official in the clergy (Catholic or
Catholic-related?) gave a speech very shortly after 9/11 in which he
stated, "By the grace of God... that I not become the evil I deplore."
What was the exact quote, who said it, under exactly what
circumstances, and on which date? It was in large letter in the San
Diego Union-Tribune, most likely in the Sunday following the attack.

The original quote was by Rev. Nathan Baxter, Dean of Washington
National Cathedral, that "we not become the evil that we deplore." He
said this during the memorial service held at the Cathedral on
September 14. Quoted in
http://www.globeandmail.com/special/attack/pages/washington_0915_a12_1.html
(an article entitled "Tears, prayers as U.S. girds for war" By JOHN
IBBITSON, published in The Globe and Mail, Saturday, September 15,
2001"

Baxter's words were repeated in a speech made by Barbara Lee in a
speech to the House of Representatives later the same day. The full
text of her speech is

I need to see the full quote please from Nathan Baxter. One place
that I now that you could find it is in the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE.
They had a whole huge feature article on the proceeding of the the day
at the National Cathedral just a few days after the attack, and they
even offset his quote in large letters in the newspaper at that time.
Barbara Lee truncated the original quote, and I can't seem to find it,
short of going back to that newspaper myself. I was hoping that you
help me with this so that I would not have to do this. I appreciate
all of the efforts that you have made to assist me, and Ihope that you
will be able to find me the original quote very soon.

Here is the full quotation:

"Today, we gather to be reassured that God hears the lamenting and
bitter weeping of Mother America because so many of her children are
no more. Let us now seek that assurance in prayer for the healing of
our grief stricken hearts, for the souls and sacred memory of those
who have been lost. Let us also pray for divine wisdom as our leaders
consider the necessary actions for national security, wisdom of the
grace of God that as we act, we not become the evil we deplore."

from PBS at http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/terrorism/july-dec01/remember_9-14.html
This page has a link to a real audio clip of this and the words of
some other speakers at the service.

Hello,

If you're interested in any other speeches made around that time, I
ran into this site while doing other research.

Thank you so much. I am so happy to have gotten the original quote,
and to get so much more information on how this quote was used in the
political culture. Thank you so much again-- perhaps you don't know
how much this means to me.

Sincerely,

Tina Miller
