Hi

What language was spoken in Crimea in the year 1000 (nearing the end
of the Viking Age in Europe)?

Unfortunately, I don't have the special sources ready now, but from my
history studies I can say for sure that the following main languages
were spoken around 1000 AD on the Crimean:

- Crimean Gothic, which was still spoken there in the 18th century
- Khazaric, the now-extinct language of the Khazars who had ruled most
of the Crimean from the 7th to the 10th century
- Greek, because the southern coast with the city of Chersones was
Byzantine territory

Would this answer your question?

This is a great answer. I was assuming Greek was prevalent near the
southern tip--and I'm assuming Norse was spoken as well due to the
Varangian contingents still operating in the late Byzantine Empire.
thank you. any follow ups would be great.
