Your question is probably too vague to be answerable. If you'd tell us
more about the situation, someone might be able to help. The more
information you can provide, the better.

****This got listed in comments, I wanted to put it up here for the reseachers.****

Also, mattjames, why hasn't your company told you what to do, or
pointed you to the author of the page. If it is their webpage, they
should have some of this information.

I have a web site to change for this company that had some one doing
all the work for them, In the mean time this person has left the the
company and now they want me to change the web site for them.

With not having to much experience in web sites I was wondering if I
could change this web site with out any problems.

The company has information on the host that they have the web site
with, so with the comments that i have already recieved with my
question all I have to do is down load the site and change the HTML in
the source and then send the site back to the host.

I have not as yet seen the infomation about the host and the web site
from this perticular company so what kind of information am I looking
for and what Information I must have to change this web site.

Once I have up dated the web site do I just send it back to the host
and it changes automatically or do I have to contact them to say to
replace it with the new version. And I will have to send this back by
using FTP and I can do this by using publish on Netscape composer but
is there any other way of doing this.
The reason I am asking these questions is because with the quick
departure of the main guy who authored the web site and done all the
up dating I am the only one left with any knowledge of computers, so
all I really need is anything I need to know about up dating this
website and keeping this up to date, as everything that this guy done
he took with him but I do have all the information from the host about
this site(FTP INFO + PASS WORDS).
I have a good knowledge of HTML but the other languages I will have to
read up on, even though this may take some time but as long as i can
change the text this will be fine for the time being, So if there is
anything else that you think I should know please let me know.

That's like saying: "How can I alter a manuscript I have not written?"
What exactly are you asking for? Do you need HTML information?

Assuming the web site is generated using 'static' HTML you will need
to download the website to your own computer, either using Save As in
your browser page-by-page or by using a program which follows the
links from any web page and automatically saves all the linked pages
to your computer.

You will then need to edit the source HTML, and then upload the
changed pages back to the web server. This will probably require you
to have FTP access to the web server.

If the pages are dynamic HTML such as ASP or PHP then you may need to
change both the data files and the scripting files that drive the
system. This will be more complicated.

Why on earth has the company asked you to change the website? Do they
own the website? Have they provided you with FTP details?

Frankly, everything about this is so vague that it doesn't seem right.
What is going on here?

OK, now we are getting somewhere. You will probably need the compnay
to supply you with:
(a) the FTP host address,
(b) the FTP user ID,
(c) the FTP password.

Do you have HTML knowledge? Something about this question does not
seem to ring true, so I am wondering why the company has asked you
when you do not have basic FTP knowledge?

Even if you have some HTML knowledge the website may involve Java,
JavaScript, CGI, PHP, MySQL, or a variety of other possibilities - so
again your question really needs to be more specific. Can you give
the website address, and then we may be able to help you in greater
detail?

Hi mattjames,

There are several ways to do it, the only thing you really need is the
FTP server where the site files are (usually is
ftp.thedomainnameoftheweb.com) and the username and password to log
in.

If you know who is your hosting provider it is so easy as call them.
If not, you could try to investigate with some useful tools you can
find in Internet (http://www.whois.sc).

Once you have the FTP Server, the username and the password, you can
edit the page offline or online:

- Offline: Dreamweaver, Frontpage, Hotdog,...

- Online: www.kameleweb.com (the one I use for my website)

I hope this info helps you.

sourceman.
