VPNs require an in-depth understanding of public network security issues and taking proper precautions in VPN deployment. If a customer is truly concerned about security, they should consider an IPSec VPN. IPSec provides an additional layer of protection by using data encryption in addition to the tunneling provided by other VPN mechanisms like MPLS. If a customer is using an MPLS VPN and their provider's network is breached, the data can actually be readable and usable. An IPSec VPN with built-in encryption technology will protect critical data even if a network is compromised. While this may be overkill for some, it's table-stakes for others. Basically design the VPN to ensure all points are covered security-wise. Then make sure there can be no breaches of security at the other end as well. |
