Question ID: 337853
What are the best ways/approaches to find a cheaply-priced
lowish-mileage used Toyota Sienna in the Washington DC area?
I am already looking at the Washington Post classifieds every morning,
and I'm looking at the listings on cars.com every day. I have also
contacted the used-car departments of several Toyota dealers in the
Washington area to let them know my criteria (low mileage, ie, under
40 or 60k miles; under $12,000 and better under $10,000; and bumps and
dents do not matter to me), and they are actively looking for a
vehicle that meets these criteria.
Are there other approaches I haven't thought of? Eg, any other web
sites, or any other ideas?

I've had very good experiences locating used cars from the
AutoTrader website, especially if you can locate vehicles
for sale by private owners.

I ran a search on AutoTrader for Toyota Siennas costing
from 0 - $12,000, for any year in their database, which
runs from 1984 to 2005, for 50 miles from the center of
Washington, D.C. (where I was born) at the zipcode of
the White House, 20500.

The resulting page provides a list of 22 vehicles from
1998 to 2001, two of which are available from private
sellers. The interface on the page allows you to sort
the results by several criteria, such as price, year,
mileage, distance from your zipcode. The mileages, some
of which are not shown, ran from a high of 119,000 to
a low of 76,644 for a 1998 model, for $11,914, from
Bill Page Toyota, which can be seen on the following page:
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?rdpage=thumb&car_id=157164583&dealer_id=601605&car_year=1998&make=TOYOTA&distance=50&max_price=12000&model=SIENNA&sort_type=mileage&advcd_on=n&end_year=2005&min_price=0&address=20500&search_type=used&advanced=n&start_year=1984&=&color=&cardist=8

The least expensive/best mileage combination is a 1999
with 93493 miles for $8995, from Toyota of Stafford shown
here:
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?rdpage=thumb&car_id=157870148&dealer_id=50745730&car_year=1999&make=TOYOTA&distance=50&max_price=12000&model=SIENNA&sort_type=mileage&advcd_on=n&end_year=2005&min_price=0&address=20500&search_type=used&advanced=n&start_year=1984&=&color=&cardist=37

The two from private sellers are in the middle of the ranks.
One is a '98 with 75000 miles, for $11,000:
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?rdpage=thumb&car_id=160248141&dealer_id=&car_year=1998&make=TOYOTA&distance=50&max_price=12000&model=SIENNA&sort_type=mileage&advcd_on=n&end_year=2005&min_price=0&address=20500&search_type=used&advanced=n&start_year=1984&=&color=&cardist=20

The other is a 2000 with 87000 miles, for $10,995:
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?rdpage=thumb&car_id=149962082&dealer_id=&car_year=2000&make=TOYOTA&distance=50&max_price=12000&model=SIENNA&sort_type=mileage&advcd_on=n&end_year=2005&min_price=0&address=20500&search_type=used&advanced=n&start_year=1984&=&color=&cardist=7

The entire list is available on this page:
http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/results.jtmpl?&model=SIENNA&start_year=1984&end_year=2005&min_price=0&max_price=12000&distance=50&x=23&y=7&advanced=y&advcd_on=n&make=TOYOTA&address=20500&search_type=used&sort_type=mileage

Contact information, as well as links to obtain a vehicle
history using the vehicle's VIN number, are provided.

Bear in mind that listings may not be removed immediately
after a vehicle is sold, so it is possible that you will
discover a vehicle to be sold when you contact the seller.

If you're willing to take your time, you can browse the
listings on a daily basis, and be the first to catch the
newest listings. You can start your search from the home
page, and the site will add cookies to your browser to
retain many of the preferences you've chosen in the past:

Another option is CarsDirect.com, which returns 76
listings for Toyota Sienna within 50 miles of ZIP Code
20500. Unfortunately, the lowest price is $11,990 for
a 1999 with 78,912 miles on it, as shown on this page:

The prices quickly exceed $12,000 after that. The full
list is available starting on this page:

I've always found AutoTrader to be the resource of choice
for the best prices. I hope you'll find this site to be as
useful as I have over the years.
