I am interested in the history of the Silk Road

The Silk Road has a fascinating history and some of the best places to
research this subject can be found here:

I would highly recommend Oliver Wild's account of the Silk Road (the
first link here) and I am sure this will provide answers to most, if
not all, of your questions.  His summary of the subject also includes
a recommended reading list of books for further information.
