Question ID: 338228
Are there some simple keystrokes to correct typing in capital letters
which I actually want in lower case? I am not a touch typist so often
forget to switch off the caps lock and find I have typed a whole
sentence in upper case.
Is there a source for typing special letters or effects, e.g. accented
letters in foreign languages?

Hey Berrydown!
What operating system are you using? What program are you typing in?

Thanks,
djbaker-ga

I am very fond of a simple, free program called CapUnlock:

CapsUnlock supersedes the locking mechanism of the CapsLock key and
thus prevents the accidental turning on of CapsLock. It runs as a
little tray application in the taskbar. The user can select an
override option, which allows CapsLock to be switched on and off by
holding down the left Shift key while pressing CapsLock. Furthermore
CapsUnlock also disables the Insert key."

Like many people, I type sloppily enough that I often activate
CapsLock by accident. Once CapsUnlock is installed, the CapsLock key
is disabled. Of course, you can easily re-enable it if you want it
back (but I never have!)

Please try CapsUnlock. If it meets your needs, I'll be pleased to
repost this information as the answer to your question.

Thanks for the comments. I asked my wife about the caplock and she
told me about Format... I'll try out the CapUnLock program.
What I am really trying to find out is if there is a list or reference
to the many key combinations in Word. For example the keys to get an
accented e for use in French or an umlaut in German. Or holding down
CTRL and the mouse wheel to zoom,or ALT plus the left and right to get
Back and Forward. I am sure there are many more of these tricks.
Where do I find them?

select Format , Change case

for everything else there is no such solution other then disabling
your capslock as suggested above

My Eudora v4.2.2 lets me change the case automatically: Edit>Message
Plug-ins. Once I'm at that point in the menu, I can choose

Upper Case
Lower Case
Word Caps
Sentence Caps

It's been a long time since I've used a word processor other than MS
Word, but I would guess that many would allow the same easy cap
changing. I know BBEdit v4.6 does. If WordPerfect didn't, I'd be
surprised.

Can I ask why you are using CapsLock for a single uppercase letter
when the "Shift" key would suffice and remove any chance of leaving
CapsLock turned on? CapsLock is generally used for complete words and
sentences, Shift for Capital letters and shorter words...

Here's an Extended ASCII Chart that will give a way of 'typing special
letters or effects, e.g. accented letters in foreign languages' ...

http://www.cdrummond.qc.ca/cegep/informat/Professeurs/Alain/files/ascii.htm

The way it works, is you hold down the Alt key whilst entering the 3
digit number shown alongside on the left. So to get é, you enter Alt
130 ...

There may be other ways (apart from Inserting a Symbol) but I find this useful.
