Can you provide me with a link to any open source project that takes a
web page URL as an input, renders the page and saves the result to an
image file completely automatically, perhaps using
the KHTML engine?

Hi deweller,

khtml2png is a free command line program to create PNGs of webpages
using the KHTML engine:
http://www.babysimon.co.uk/khtml2png/index.html

Be sure to check the README file for limitations regarding cookies, Flash, etc.
