Question ID: 338307
I'm writting up a rough budget for a large sculpture. About how much
would i have to pay for the following items:

- 220 sq. feet of Inch-thick steel
- a 6 foot square concrete foundation 2 feet above ground, 2 below.
- Rough terain Crane rental w/ operator for 3 days
- Basic Cherry picker rental for 3 days

These figures do not have to be precise at all. i just need some
SEMI-REALISTIC figures that would come relatively close to how much it
would actually cost. The sculpture would be in brooklyn so prices
from companies in the area would be a plus, but i do need an answer
very quickly and the basic price figures are most important. thanks.

Howdy dingus-ga,

I am posting this as a Request for Question Clarification as I do not
know what your time frame is, as well as the vagaries of the project.
Here are some rough numbers for you.

220 sq. ft. of 1" steel = $7000
- 7 sheets of 4' x 8' x 1" A36 Steel Plate @ $1000 a sheet delivered
144 cu. ft. concrete = $700
- 6 yards of concrete @ $100 a yard plus $100 delivery
Crane rental = $3000
- $1000 a day rental
Cherry picker = $1500
- $500 a day rental

Total for the above: $12,200.

Keep in mind you have lots of cost you haven't mentioned. You will
need the following, which isn't even a complete list.

- Rebar and anchors for the foundation
- Engineering plans for the foundation - that is a lot of steel
- Cutting and welding rig, etc. if you don't have them already
- Come-alongs, sledges, vise grips, gloves, hard hats, slings, etc.
- You are probably in union turf, so crane, etc. costs could be more

To be safe, add 50% to 100% to the estimate, so $18,000 to $24,000.
From my prior experience, I would go with $24,000 and be happy if it
came in under budget.

I helped Kenneth Snelson, in small ways, on a project in Denver that
was similar to this piece of his.

Your project is somewhat more ambitious, at least from a weight stance.
The piece that ended up in Denver, "Soft Landing," was aluminum tubing,
and it was a tough build in some ways.

4' x 8' x 1" steel is heavy. If you go with stainless or Cortin your
material costs will be more. There are hundreds of things that could
add to the cost of the project.

If the above helps, tell me and I will post it as an Answer.

Looking Forward, denco-ga - Google Answers Researcher
