I would like to know about the town of Merk, Hungary around 1900. I am
interested in the social and political climate, but anything else is
fine. Any reference to the surname Brothag in Merk at that time would
be very welcome.

There is no answer at this time.

Mérk is small village in Hungary, has about 2000 residents. Around
1900 it had a mainly kraut (German speaking) population, tried to keep
its cultural difference. It had an enviably good working agriculture.

The official homepage of Mérk:
http://merk.keletnet.hu/,

the history of Mérk
http://merk.keletnet.hu/tortenelem.html

both are in Hungarian.

John Brothag, born in Hungary, no location given, in 1875 can be found
   http://www.ancestry.com/search/main.htm
It starts with John, and lists several family members.

You just need to give them your name and an e-mail address to get the
info. It has been entered by Terry Bava, terry_bava@yahoo.com

Have not found the town of Merk though.
