I have a Sony Ericsson T616, with software (firmware) revision R1A054,
Model AAB-1031011-BV. I understand there have been several software
updates to the phone, and they add some bug fixes and feature
enhancements. I would like a procedure detailed or located wherein I
can update the firmware of this phone myself. I do not want to ship
the phone across the country to get it upgraded.

What city are you in? There are other choices for where to have the
upgrade done. And it does seem like a very worthwhile upgrade.

Let me know where you are and I'll see if I can't find something local for you.

I am in Farmingdale, Long Island, New York. I work in Queens so that
is viable as well. Actually NYC as a whole I can do (minus Brooklyn,
the Bronx and Staten Island, of course).

Well indole, I have searched and searched and there is no place
"official" even near New York. Sony Ericsson has Minneapolis and Texas
and they will not upgrade firmware unless required to repair a
non-functioning phone. Independent centers in California WILL do this
for a $25 charge. Some claim that any T-Mobile store can do it. And
then some claim the cell phone shops in China Town can do it, but I
would be very sceptical.

It seems very risky to try this yourself. The only firmware available
is "hacked" and you would need firewire and a lot of luck fro the
phone to continue to work after a home brewed upgrade.

So I am afraid my searches have not been much help for you.

I've used this service a few times. They offer a 'ship-in' service
*and* and do-it-yourself service. The do-it-yourself service requires
a cable.

You'll need:

http://www.globalmob.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=115&cat=45&page=1

and

http://www.globalmob.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=2

I would highly recommend shipping your phone to virtualdynamix for
service -- they did an excellent job with my t39m and even did some
hardware fixes that needed to be done to avoid some problems.

Their ship-in service is Sony Ericsson authorized.

Thanks.
