<A number of Balthus drawings have sold for over $100,000 in recent years.

Record for a Balthus drawing.
According to Artprice.com, the top price record for a Drawing
?Watercolour by Balthus was for ?Etude pour le Peintre et son Modèle?
which sold for $302,692. The work was sold on 21st October 2003.

Cathy and I, 1932, 26 x 24 cm sold for $221,530 on October 27th 2000.

-------------------------------------------------------------
The estimate for the work at Sotherby?s is in line with the high
prices achieved above. This is a large work at 100 x 70 cm and few of
this size have come up for auction over the last twenty years. I
counted 7 on the artprice.com site. The prices achieved by two works
of a comparable size and made at around the same period (Etude pour le
Peintre and Reverie) have each exceeded $300,000. However there have
been a number of Balthus works with high estimates that have failed to
sell (see below).

This response was very well researched, perhaps as well as it could
be. It still does not answer the question as to whether this
particular work is worth the upper end of the estimates but perhaps
more than what the researcher provided would be mere speculation.
Thank you very much.

There certainly seems to be a discrepancy here, as Christies have two
Balthus drawings/water colours of nudes at auction in NY the day
before (5 May), which are from the same year (1972) as the Sotheby's
drawing; but Christies have estimated the prices at $25,000 - $35,000,
and $30,000 - $40,000 respectively.
