I believe the person you are searching for is actually Aleck "Brodway"
Smith. He was born in New York, NY but I was unable to find an exact
birthdate. He died on July, 7th of 1919.

He played his first game on April 23rd of 1897 with the Brooklyn
Bridegrooms (later to be called the Brooklyn "Trolley" Dodgers). He
spent two years with them before moving to the Brooklyn Superbas. He
played with 7 different teams over 9 seasons and played his last game
on Oct 5, 1906.

There is more information and a pretty decent stats listing here:

Hope this helps out!
