What leads you to think a photo of this event was ever published? Is
this just based on the presence of photographers at the time, or has
there ever been an actual sighting of the photo?

If so, was it published in a newspaper at the time? Did you come
across it in a book?

Anything else you can tell us would be a real help in researching this.

in answer to more information, my fathers unit was the 3rd battalion
antitank platoon, 335th reg't of the 84th division, familiar with the
division? they were nicknamed railsplitters, red round patch with
white axe cutting a log. attached to the 9th army. they were one of
the first units to hit the elbe river sat and waited weeks for russian
arrival, sporatic fighting took casualties. my father thinks they were
in the vacinity of a small triangle of towns one gartow.if you have
map access it is in the area of river. the march back started in
early morning. what made it so bizarre is that 7 soldiers were strung
out for at least a mile or more marching 4 abreast p.w.s as far as
knowing if commercial shots were taken speculation for at that era
flash bulbs were popping like fireflies, he comments. until the
computer in his home he has never searched out the photo
