Question ID: 339867
I've been asked to come up with a preventive maintenance schedule for
a Cozzoli liquid dispenser, model F400X. The maintenance involves
passivation of the stainless steel parts to prevent rouge formation.
The piston and syringe are hardened chrome plated 316L stainless
steel. What is the chemical compatibility of hardened chrome plated
316L stainless steel with a 10% solution of phosphoric acid at room
temperature? I'll need a hard copy of the reference (a printout of
the table used for the answer and where the table can be found would
be fine). Thanks.

Well, there was a comment here, it wasn't all that flattering but it
did describe a workable (though impractical, in this case) experiment
to determine chemical compatibility.
I'll clarify what I'm looking for. Stainless steel equipment can be
immersed in acid baths to remove rust. Tables of chemical
compatibility rate the compatibility of types of stainless steel with
different acid baths, excellent meaning the acid won't harm the steel,
good meaning there will be some cracking and pitting over time. The
temperature of the acid bath is also a factor. Hardened chrome plated
stainless steel should be just fine in a 10% phosphoric acid bath at
room temperature but I can't find a reference to back me up. It's a
specific question with a short answer if anyone can find it. Thanks
again.
