I've already got myself a nifty app called netlimiter, which does a wonderful job of restricting the bandwidth available to any app running on my pc - both upload and download. However I'm looking for something to expand on this; specifically an application that allows me to prioritise which application can hog all the bandwidth at a time. For instance, I'd like to keep a file sharing application running in the background at full bandwidth, but prioritise any internet explorer downloads (be they file downloads or just web pages) above that. Is such an application available for windows? |

Hi, I found 2 solutions for your problem. The first one is the bandwidth controller from http://www.bandwidthcontroller.com/. You can prioritize the HTTP traffic compared to Peer-to-Peer (kazaa and friends) exactly like you want to. The computer on which it runs must have Windows 2000 or Windows XP on it, Windows NT or 98/ME are NOT supported. I think that this a fairly cheap and easy-to-setup solution, 30 days trial after its $49.99 US. The second solution is the ADSL-Bandwidth-Management-HOWTO(http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/ADSL-Bandwidth-Management-HOWTO/index.html) from the The Linux Documentation Project. This is a free alternative for the current Windows commercial products. This is harder to setup but its free! I don't really know which of the 2 solutions above works the best but the Linux one says it can use about 95% of the bandwidth. Yes for some technical reasons you cannot use 100% of your bandwitdh while monitoring/controlling. I hope this will help you, Mat Chevre |
