Question ID: 340094
When starting up, my comp throws up a window showing msn messenger and
the request to log in. I prefer to do this later in my session. How
can I change the settings so messenger stays in THE BOX until I WANT
IT. The Messenger I have loaded is 6.1.0211, Also windows XP.

Hi there Liviflores. The stuff you sent seems to be for completely
disabling Messenger. But I still want it available [ the missus uses
it a lot for family] What I hoped for is for it NOT to pop up in the
start sequence, but still be available for use. It pops up along with
ASUS probe, McCafee Antivrus and one other daily program I like. After
a few seconds, all of them pop down again and go back to where they
belong. Not so Messenger. It just sits there until I shrink it to the
task bar. Hope that`s clearer. I wait in anticipation.

Try removing it from start up list at the msconfig tool:
1. Startup Folder. Make sure no entry there for Messenger.
2. Go to Start/Run, and type Msconfig.
3. On the Startup tab , uncheck any option for it. (msmsgs.exe)
4. Search for any reference to messenger in the Services tab and uncheck it.
5. If you are using NAV 2003, disable Instant Messenger monitoring.

See the following page for reference about how to use this tool:
"How to Use MSCONFIG":
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

Let me know if this works.

Back again, Liviflores, Did all that you suggested, took messenger off
the left side of windows main page, went to configurations and startup
tab. unchecked messenger and pressed apply. When I restarted, a notice
popped up saying that settings had been changed and I was still in
configuration/ diagnostic / setup starter mode . Went back and clicked
the "normal" startup mode. Everything still the same. It seems that
unchecking messenger from the startup tab changes the system from
normal to diagnostic/config. Heres a list of items ticked " common
startup".
1. HP PSC 1000 PRINTER COMMON STARTUP
2. HPODDT 01.EXE ??? COMMON STARTUP
3. INTERVIDEO WINCE COMMON STARTUP

4. MICROSOFT OFFICE COMMON STARTUP
5. REMOTE CONTROLLER COMMON STARTUP
6. TV SCHL COMMON STARTUP
7. WINDOWS MESSENGER COMMON STARTUP
8. WINZIP QUICKPICK COMMON STARTUP

Surely any or all of these should be removeable without too much
upset. Messenger seems to be classified along with a simple t.v.
schedule.

Hi!!

I donīt understand why this item is still checked:
7. WINDOWS MESSENGER COMMON STARTUP

Did you really uncheck it? If not please do it.
If you did it and it does not work try the following (you must be very
carefull with this):
Go to Start --> Run --> type "regedit" and then press enter.

Search for the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and delete all entries refered to the messenger.

Try to find it in the other startaup keys, see the following pages as reference:
"Manage the Programs Run at Windows Startup":
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/109/

"Editing the Registry":
http://www.winguides.com/registry/article.php?id=1&page=3

The following free tool will help you to do this task easily:
"AutoRuns":
"AutoRuns shows you what programs are configured to run during system
bootup or login. These programs include ones in your startup folder,
Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can highlight an entry and
click the "jump to" button to launch regedit with the selected entry."

Hope this helps.

Hi again Liviflores. Sorry I took so long. Yes, I did uncheck
messenger, but for some reason the "reconfigure" program I went into
from start-run-etc. would not revert back to normal operation. When I
restarted the comp. I got a warning popup that the system was still in
setup mode. And not having too much experience, I went back, re ticked
messenger and all came good again. I`ll have to get hands on help for
this one. But thanks for your help. All the info is there, but as you
yourself said, you have to be careful. To me that means that if I key
in one wrong thing, goodbye system. I`m posting your credit and the
pittance. thanks again.

Hi!!

I think that your best shot is to uninstall the messenger from your
system and them reinstall it again, something is wrong about your
messenger because no one of the proper procedures works for you.

Here a last try before uninstall it:
Start -> Run -> type gpedit.msc -> OK -> click on + in User Configuration ->
click on + in Administrative Templates -> on + in Windows Components ->
Windows Messenger -> double click on Do not automatically start
Windows Messenger initially -> Enable -> OK
Note: This setting is available under Computer and User Configuration.
If both are present, the Computer Configuration version of this
setting takes precedence.

If this does not work uninstall the messenger. You can perform one of
the methods described in the other requests or more easily try using
the following program:
xp-AntiSpy:
http://www.xp-antispy.org/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=40

Download page:
http://www.xp-antispy.org/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=26&func=fileinfo&parent=category&filecatid=18

Then download the last version of messenger from here:
http://messenger.msn.com/

Install it and try again one of the methods showed to do not
automatically start Messenger at startup.

Regarding your last comment, this question is still unanswered, so at
this point you are not charged with the full fee, only the 50 cents
for posting the question. This is why you can't find the stars. If you
consider that my research deserves the prize, let me know and I will
post my comments in the answer box.
Note that this is not the way that Google Answers works, only some
kind of questions, like computer troubles related, walk this way of
"try answers" because, and your case is a good example, not always the
common solution works for everything.

Good luck with the next shots!!

For Livi. Tried to do as you suggested and typed in gpedit.msc in the
appropriate box but it was not accepted. Looks like I`ll have to get
hands on help. I think I still have a couple of smarter mates out
there who owe me. You have done a good job with all your info. Post
your stuff in the answer box and collect your treasure. Again, thanks
heaps. Pugwashjw.

Hi pugwashjw!!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to post this answer.

First of all be sure to log on as administrator:
If you want to log on as Administrator, but this option is not show on
the Welcome screen, at the Welcome screen hold the Ctrl-Alt key and
press Del twice. This will bring up the normal login and you can log
on as Administrator. To perform a fast switch, click Start and click
Log Off. Click the green Switch User button to return to the Welcome
screen and choose
the account you want to use. Also you can use the shortcut pressing
"Windows key + L" together.
The following article may help you if you have problems with this:
"Log on as Administrator in Normal Mode"

Tips to prevent Messenger from running at Windows startup:

- Try removing it from start up list at the msconfig tool:

- Try also the following:
Start -> Run -> type gpedit.msc -> OK -> click on + in User Configuration ->
click on + in Administrative Templates -> on + in Windows Components ->
Windows Messenger -> double click on Do not automatically start
Windows Messenger initially -> Enable -> OK
Note: This setting is available under Computer and User Configuration.
If both are present, the Computer Configuration version of this
setting takes precedence.

- If that does not work you must try editing the registry:
Go to Start --> Run --> type "regedit" and then press enter --> search
for the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and delete all entries refered to the messenger.

Try to find it in the other startup keys, see the following pages as reference:

If nothing works you must uninstall the messenger and then reinstall
it and try again to use one of the above methods.
Try using the following program (easy way):
xp-AntiSpy:
http://www.xp-antispy.org/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=40

Download page:
http://www.xp-antispy.org/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=26&func=fileinfo&parent=category&filecatid=18

You can do it manually, just follow the instructions at the following pages:
"How to Remove Windows Messenger on Windows XP":

Install it and try again one of the methods showed to do not
automatically start Messenger at startup.

Hi pugwashjw,

I believe there is a simpler way to achieve what you are after:

1. Launch MSN Messenger
2. Click "Tools" from the menu options along the top of the window.
3. Click "options..." from the resulting drop-down menu
4. Select the "General" tab and you should see the following 2 check
boxes selected under the "Sign in" section:
- Automatically run messenger when I log on to Windows.
- Open Messenger main Window when Messenger starts.
5. Uncheck the "Open Messenger main Window when Messenger starts."

This will mean that MSN Messenger still loads up when Windows starts
but you will only see the icon in the taskbar which you will have to
double-click to launch the MSN Messenger window.

for lotd. tried what you suggested. Got to options but mine has no
general tab. It does have a "preference" section that states two
things. 1. run program when windows starts. This was and remains
unchecked. and 2. allow to run in background. this was checked. Yes, I
do want the program to run but not show its front page, like I said,
with the virus programs. The first choice is a bit ambiguous so I`m
going to check it and see.. a bit like suck it and see..poor livie is
waiting for his/her money.

Hi there,

It sounds like your problem is that you have two versions of MSN
Messenger installed, both the one you quoted above 6.1.0211, and the
older Windows Messenger (probably 4.6 or 4.7). What you want to do is
stop the old one from running. The easiest way is to just do it
through the old version's options.

Since the Start menu icon for that old version is probably gone, you
can open it by clicking Start, click run, and type "msmsgs" (without
the quotes). When it opens click Tools and open the Options menu.
Click preferences and clear the two checkboxes, Run when Windows
Starts and Allow this program to run in the background. That should
stop it from loading.

Also, the reason the problem reoccured after you used msconfig is that
you selected normal mode again. If you try that route again, when the
msconfig dialog box pops up after you restart your computer you need
to click the box that says "Don't show this message or launch the
System Configuration Utility when Windows starts." That would almost
certainly solve your problem for good (if my first solution doesnt
work, give that a try)

Hope this helps!

For Deadlychiapet; THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED. That last paragraph in your
comment did the trick. The msmsgs part did not do it, I used the
msconfig , as suggested by livi., to untick all the unwanted junk.
What tossed me was the final warning about still being in setup. The
clicking/ticking of the " dont show this box again" did it. I reckon
the wording of that box is very misleading, implying that the setup
configuration is still operating. When in fact, ticking the box sends
it all back to normal. I`m still learning.
Subject: Re: Computers
From: deadlychiapet-ga on 07 May 2004 19:50 PDT

Good to hear! The box doesn't actually go back to normal. If you run
msconfig again you'll see it goes to selective startup, which for all
intents and purposes is normal except for the programs you've
unticked. But, that doesn't really matter anyway since your problem is
solved. Good!
