Hi! I'm looking for a breakdown of the damage (in $) in the united
states per year (or any one year close to 2004) caused by fire,
floods, storms, natl. disasters, etc. I gotta think there is a pie
chart or something somewhere showing this. Thanks!

Hi sgeist,

This is a very informative site, published by the NCDC (National
Climatic Data Center).
It does not contain a pie chart, but it is as informative. You can
choose to look up data by state.
Click on a state (Note: You do have a choice to select all, but if the
database is too large, it will ask you to narrow the search.)
Click ?Continue?
Enter your date range
Enter county, if desired
Select an event type, such as flood, hail, forest fire, etc.
Click the grey ?List Storms? button.

You will be given data on each event, including magnitude, deaths,
injuries, property and crop damage in dollars. Click on the location
links for more detailed information.

This NOAA site has comprehensive preliminary US data for 2003, with
property and crop damage in dollars. Select by disaster, year, and
state. This site is loaded with information and facts on all kinds of
weather including aviation weather, hydrologics, weather warnings, and
much, much more.

Or, by selecting "US Summaries?

This map (2001) shows location of disasters, but no monetary loss.

As far as a pie chart, this one is recent to 2001, and the data comes
from NOAA, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The
actual dollar loss is listed below the pie charts.

The above site has not yet compiled more recent information, however,
you can see some more recent information on this page:

This site lists the most severe 49 US disasters from 1980 to 2001
