This is summer time and I have always wanted to go north and see the land of the midnight sun. With global warming it should not be too cold either. So, I want to drive as far north as possible. I live in the 48 contiguous states of the USA. I need to know what proper roads to take to go as far north as possible. And food, lodging, gas along the way. |

Hello andromedanebula-ga: It is a pleasure to answer your question. A road trip to the Arctic Circle shouldn?t be a problem these days as there are accessible roads in the summer time. Before I continue, it is interesting to know that there are only two highways in North America that cross the Arctic Circle. One is the famous Dalton highway that runs from Fairbanks, Alaska to the northern most point in Alaska at Prudhoe Bay. The Arctic Circle starts even before the half way point. The other is the Dempster Highway in the North West Territories of Canada. It starts 25 miles north of Dawson City (Yukon) and ends up at Inuvik (NWT). The Arctic Circle starts at the half way point. Both of these highways are accessible in summer. You will find these highways listed in all of the major map guides as these are major routes. The Dempster Highway in Canada is also known as the routes 5 and 8. I will not go in detail on the routes that you should take because it is up to you to select the best and most desirable route to these major highways. Here are the details of what you should prepare for, if you undertake a journey on these routes: Dalton Highway Map http://gorp.away.com/gorp/location/ak/ak_ne.htm Facilities http://gorp.away.com/gorp/publishers/fulcrum/ak_hwy3.htm Road Guide & Conditions http://gorp.away.com/gorp/activity/byway/ak_dalto.htm A tale of travel to the Arctic Circle (Dalton Highway and Dempster Highway) http://www.davidsimmons.com/pers/travel/arctic/ Dempster Highway Map http://www.canadatravelguide.info/maps/yukonmap.asp Facilities http://www3.sympatico.ca/billh56/ (refer to right hand side menu for info).
