Dear trevorkeyes-ga;
Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question.
I didn?t locate the article you were talking about, but having spent
more than 20 years in law enforcement myself I can readily dispute the
web site's claim as nonsense.
?The total number of people killed in highway crashes in 2001 was
42,116, compared to 41,945 in 2000. An average of 114 people die each
day in car crashes in the U.S?

?2000 FBI Crime Index figures: There were an estimated 15,517 murders
in 2000, virtually no change from the 1999 murder estimate of 15,522.
The number of murders was 21 percent less than in 1996 and 37.2
percent less than in 1991?

As you can see death rates are dropping a bit from year to year but
homicide rates are dropping faster than deaths from automobile
accidents. This could, theoretically, over time, place homicide rates
higher than accident deaths, but only if you were making the
comparisons against ALL ANNUAL US HOMICIDES, and not just those as a
result of home invasions. In other words, if home invasion homicides
were extracted from the estimated 16,000 homicides that occur each
year and the non-home invasion death were removed from the equation
for the purposes of your question (and these account for the vast
majority of them), the total number of deaths as a direct result of
home invasion would clearly pale in comparison to the nearly 45,000
annual deaths resulting from automobile accidents, a figure which
would in fact remain unchanged.
So you see, no matter how you look at it, and even if home invasion
deaths increased significantly tomorrow to account for half of all US
homicides that occur (which they do not, by the way), the total number
of home invasion deaths still would never exceed the number of deaths
by automobile accidents.
I hope you find that my research exceeds your expectations. If you
have any questions about my research please post a clarification
request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating
and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again
in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.
