Question ID: 341294
I created a recipe for a sauce and I'd like to manufacture this sauce
and sell it at supermarkets and restaurants.
What do I need to do in order to do this? What kind of insurance do I
need? Where can I get my sauce mass produced and bottled? What do I
need to know about chemicals and expiration dates?

thanks!

Are you seeking to manufacture this in your own facility or would
outsourcing it be okay?

First, you need to find out if folks like it enough to want to buy it.

Your friends may tell you it's marvellous (which I am sure it is) but
getting a consumer product to market is all about branding.

Then you have to look at how you are going to persuade shops to put it
prominently on their shelves, etc.

I don't wish to discourage you but there is A LOT of competition out
there and it's a very long haul!

Best of Luck!

thanks. The sauce is different and fills a niche. Almost like Alfredo
sauce is something for people that dont want tomato sauce on their
pasta, or like A1 is sauce for people that dont want to put ketchup on
their steak.

So theres no competition for it, but Id have to convince the powers
that be that their customers would love it on their food. I think they
(the customers) will.

Hi, i feel that once you have decided that the product is good then
what you can do first is Patent your product so that no once else used
your product methods and in case they do that you can always approach
the Courts. The next thing for you to would be to find out where you
can get the materials for mass production of your product. Get back to
me if you want anything else. Thank You

I admire your confidence but the fact is, and the statistics on
getting consumer products to market sadly will prove this, it is going
to be near impossible for you to get anywhere with your idea.
However, if you are absolutely convinced that you are on to something
and the public will love it (and you can bear rejection well if they
don't), why not persuade a suitable local restaurant to take some of
your sauce on a free trial. If their customers like it you may be
able to persuade the restaurant to buy some sauce from you. Armed with
such positive feedback not only that consumers like it and are
prepared to have it on their food (one doesn't necessarily follow the
other) but that people (the restaurant in your case) are prepared to
pay good money for it, you will be in a much better position to
interest anyone in making it or selling it.

Dear Marc,

This is a much more complicated question than you probably expect,
given the price you set on a Research on it.

You could read several questions I answered on a similar subject, that
might be helpful to specific facets of the issue:

food buyers and food critics in Massachusetts
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=108708

food editors of Massachusetts Newspapers and Magazines

And from other Researchers, on the same subject:

Custom Packers (co packers)

If you search through Google Abnswers, you might find further answers
that could help you. However, you're currently asking four "big"
questions, on a $5 sum (from which the Research receives $3.75, less
than a dollar/per question), and I recommend that you'll look up the
pricing guide, for more help in setting a price for your answers:

Harling,
I have an answer to your previous question about Taize, now expired.
Would you like to repost the question, so I can provide the answer?
