Question ID: 341574
what is the difference between a SCSI hard drive that is a 10k.6 and a
10k III? I've seen drives listed as IV, III and "6" - is this a model
or a benchmark/performance comparison indicator.

thanks

Howdy concord101-ga,

The number after the 10K (which indicates a drive runs at 10,000 RPMs)
indicates it's "generation" number. So, a 10K III SCSI drive is a 3rd
Generation drive and so on.

The differences in generations generally is in data rate. Here are
quotes from articles and statistics on 1st through 6th generation
Seagate 10K SCSI drives. The data rate is increased by doing things
such as increasing buffer size and lowering seek rates.

The Red Hill Hard Drive Guide [Note these rates are in Mbits. I have
added the data rates in Mbytes in the brackets.]
http://www.redhill.net.au/d-97.html

"...
Cheetah 1 Performance 1.38
Data rate 177 Mbit/sec Spin rate 10,033 RPM [22.125 Mbytes]
Seek time 7.7ms Buffer 512k
...
Cheetah 2 (1998) Performance 1.63
Data rate 231 Mbit/sec Spin rate 10,025 RPM [28.875 Mbytes]
Seek time 5.4ms Buffer 1MB
...
Cheetah 3 (1999) Performance 1.74
Data rate 308 Mbit/sec Spin rate 10,016 RPM [38.5 Mbytes]
Seek time 5.2ms Buffer 1MB
..."

StorageReview.com [Note that the below rates are in Mbytes.]
http://storagereview.com/articles/200002/20000209ST336704LW.html

"Thus, we're going to witness 4th-generation level products..."
...
"The Cheetah 18LP was equipped with a one megabyte buffer, a little bit
on the small side when compared to the competition. The 36LP beefs up the
figure to a more sizable four megs."

Seagate's Cheetah 36LP press release.

"The Cheetah 36LP delivers a 45 percent faster data rate over the previous
generation, at up to 40.2 Mbytes per second."

ReviewsHQ
http://www.reviewshq.com/reviews/Storage/more6.php

"Seagate has its 6th generation of 10K SCSI drives, which is indicated in
its name (10K.6). The company maintains that the latest generation has its
speed higher by 25% and the access time lower by 10% as compared with the
previous generation."

Seagate's Cheetah 36ES information page.
http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/marketing/detail/1,1081,346,00.html

"...Seagate meets the needs of the exploding 10K entry SCSI market with the
6th generation Cheetah ..."
...
"...data rates up to 63.2 MBytes/sec ..."
...
"...Sixth-generation speed provides a 56% faster data rate ..."
