Hi jb,
Absolutely! Here are the pros and cons of some approaches you can take to get
a list of Greater Bay Area auto dealerships:
1) Hire a data consolidation firm to compile the list for you
Pro: Someone else does the legwork
Con: It can be expensive
2) Get the list from a professional association
Pro: Someone else does the legwork
Con: You may have to pay and/or join the organization to get the information
3) Get the list from Internet Yellow Pages
Pro: The information is available
Con: The information may not be comprehensive and it's in a format that makes
it difficult to use
(Note: I've put together a list of Yellow Page links for you, all you have to
do is click on them to find the name and address of the dealerships in each
city. The problem with this approach, of course, is that it's time consuming
for you to wade through the links.)
Here's what you'll need to do for each of these approaches:
1) DATA CONSOLIDATION
I researched some of the companies listed on Google's Marketing category page
and found two that can quickly and easily provide the information you're
looking for:
InfoUSA
http://www.infousa.com
They sell business and sales leads mailing lists and sales and marketing
directories. Prices start at $180
Zapdata.com
http://zapleads.zapdata.com/servlet/iMarketServlet?APIID=5
I went through the process of constructing a sample list based on the criteria
you gave in your question. The first 25 leads are free and are delivered to you
by email within 24 hours. (You'll have to register to use the site.
Registration is free.) They'll also format the data for you in an Excel
spreadsheet if you'd like.

I entered these criteria for the sample list:
Locations: States - California
Metro Areas:
Bakersfield, CA
Chico-Paradise, CA
Fresno, CA
Merced, CA
Modesto, CA
Oakland, CA
Redding, CA
Sacramento, CA
Salinas, CA
San Francisco, CA
San Jose, CA
Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc, CA
Santa Cruz-Watsonville, CA
Santa Rosa, CA
Stockton-Lodi, CA
Vallejo-Fairfield-Napa, CA
Visalia-Tulare-Porterville, CA
Industries: SIC Codes -- 5511; 5521; 5551; 5561; 5571; 5599
Demographics: No selections
Specialty Data: No selections
Job Functions: No selections
This was an *extremely* broad search that covered six industries and lots of
metro areas. As a result, the final list produced 11,693 leads. The cost they
gave for this list was $1,283.48. The price depends on the type of data you
want and the number of results, so the final price will more than likely be
significantly lower.
As you search for the data, you may find that you'll need the SIC Codes.
Here's what each of the codes are and what they represent:
5511. New and Used Car Dealers
5521. Used Car Dealers
5551. Boat Dealers
5561. Recreational Vehicle Dealers
5571. Motorcycle Dealers
5599. Automotive Dealers, Nec
You can find links to more SIC Codes using the term
sic codebook
on Google
://www.google.com/search?q=sic+codebook
You can also search for
business to business leads
://www.google.com/search?q=business+to+business+leads
on Google, but I found the Marketing category in the Google directory to be
more useful.

2) PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS
I searched for
california automobile dealers association
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=california+automobile+dealers+association
and came up with these organizations that may be able to help you:
National Automobile Dealers Association
For franchised new car and truck dealers
http://www.nada.org/
http://www.nada.org/Content/NavigationMenu/MediaCenter/NADAData/NADAData.htm
Here's the contact information for the local NADA chapter:
Silicon Valley Auto Dealers Association
Mr. Stephen Smith
Executive Director
333 W. Santa Clara St., Suite 712
San Jose, CA 95113
(408) 979-9568
e-mail: svadasmith@aol.com
(There are other chapters listed here
http://www.nada.org/Content/NavigationMenu/MediaCenter/StateandMetroAssociations
/StateandMetroList.htm
however, I didn't see any contact information for Monterey Bay Area)
American International Automobile Dealers Association
http://www.aiada.org/
The AIADA represents over 10,000 international automobile franchises
Independent Automobile Dealers Association of California
http://www.iadac.org/
The IADAC is for any licensed California Vehicle Dealer. It covers all classes
of DMV dealer licensees, such as used, new, retail, wholesale, leasing, and
brokers.
You can contact them directly at:
3800 Auburn Blvd. Ste. B
Sacramento, CA 95821
(916) 483-1587
California Motor Car Dealers Association
http://www.cmcda.com/
Their site has a dealership search, but it'll probably be somewhat tedious for
you to get the information that you want.
3) INTERNET YELLOW PAGES
Here are links to Monterey Bay Area and San Francisco Bay Area dealerships:
San Francisco Bay Area
http://yp.yahoo.com/py/ypResults.py?
Pyt=Typ`&city=San+Francisco&state=CA&country=us&slt=37.774200&sln=-

Monterey Bay Area

&&city=Monterey&state=CA&country=us&slt=36.598969&sln=-
121.893646&cs=4&stp=y&stx=29018270
Click on "Beyond San Francisco" and "Beyond Monterey" to get more listings.
You can also click on "Dealers" at the top of the page to get additional
listings for motorcycle, RV, truck and other dealers.
Top > Automotive > Dealers > All Car Dealers
To compile this list, I went to Yahoo!, typed in
california bay area
http://search.yahoo.com/bin/search?p=california+bay+area
clicked on the metro list for each of the appropriate bay area listings and
typed in
automotive dealers
in the Local Yellow Pages box
Lastly, this site purports to have an index of 26,000 dealerships across the
US, however, I had trouble with their registration process and could not look
at the data.

Hope this helps,
