for the summer, a place in the open air would be okay, but I'd like to
know indoor garage alternatives also.  I'm not sure how long I will
need to use the parking place, but if I need it through the winter, it
would have to be indoor.  The car is a vintage 63 dodge dart, and if
some lover of old cars would like to take care of it, if that person
were definately trustworthy, I would even possibly allow the person to
use it a little.  So in short, I'd like you please, if possible, to
take a flexible, creative approach to this problem.  Maybe someone you
know lives in the country, and there's a place in a clearing, simple
as that, etc. etc.

but again, cheap cheap cheap is the operating factor, and am willing
to go a few
hours or even a little more outside of nyc.  Thank you very much.

You have hit the main problem of Parking that every New Yorker is
facing. I had been to NYC a couple of times and believe me, looking
for parking was the most tiring experience. I hope you'll get it
easily.
I’ve tried to collect info about some of the parking lots in the NYC
available for long-term parking.

Queensboro Hall Municipal Parking Garage. They charge $105 per month.

You will NOT want to park your vintage Dodge in an airport parking
lot, long-term or not.  I live on Long Island and have been to
Laguardia and JFK and all of the airports in the area and know that
the parking itself is alright, but it could very easily be damaged or
even stolen.  You should specifically be looking for an isolated
parking spot, to avoid this kind of damage.  If this helps, sometimes
larger auto body shops will store your car, and you can be reasonably
assured that it will be safe there.

The citysearch website is a great source.  I still haven't found what
I'm looking for, however.  Parking is incredibly expensive everywhere
it seems.  What I'd really like to find is a private person who lives
in the country and who'd let me keep it at least for a few months
tucked away there.  I know that's strange, but it seems like there
could be places on the web where you might be able to solicit and find
that.

I'm storing a classic car in my garage in my house in the suburbs on
the east coast. It's apparently a little annoying to the other people
living here, but, like you, I don't know where else to put it.
My sister went to Europe for three months and keeps her car in front
of a friend's house on the west coast. The west is better for storing
cars with its lack of humidity, acidic rain, and salty air.
I'm going to recommend a book, DRIVE IT FOREVER, by Sikorsky. It's
kind of old but it has good advice on storing cars for the long term
like: don't use a cover if indoors, put the frame on jack stands and
remove wheels (store tires flat), stuff towels into the exhaust and
intake, squirt oil into spark plug holes, and it also says which
fluids to drain and which to keep in! (I forgot exactly what to do to
which.) And give away the battery if it's going to be off for more
than one year.
On the other hand: I have a mechanic friend who drives, or at least
starts up, his classic cars once a week.
I guess whether you do the former or the latter depends on how long
you're storing the car for. How long are you planning on storing it?
By the way I am not indicating that I can store your car in this
answer (hard enough keeping mine around) - sorry!
PS: The joke above is missing the intro, specifically this takes place
in New York and the trip is more than just a few days, when you figure
out what $50 in "interest" just bought the woman you might get the
joke...

NJ Transit's Metropark is what you want.  $56/mo., and the garage is
incredibly busy (and staffed) twenty-four hours a day.  This makes it
a lot safer than other garages.  Four dollars and twenty minutes to
Penn Station by rail (very frequent service), or an hour's drive.

The only drawback is that you have to pay quarterly.

My situation is similar to Veronika's. I just talked to the Metropark
parking garage, and after a long and mildly confusing conversation
with Elson, found out that the maximum time limit for leaving your car
in one spot is two weeks. He said he would talk to his boss and ask if
I could leave my car for longer periods of time, like a month at a
time. I may offer to pay extra.

what do you have to pay and which months?  the house is about 40 miles
from the city in long island.
