Question ID: 342226
What is the total size of global investments in U.S. stocks, foreign
stocks, U.S. bonds, foreign bonds, and/or money market funds? The
data I have heard is $13 trillion, $14.2 trillion, $20.6 trillion, $15
trillion, and $2.8 trillion, respectively. Please include any
sub-category totals, if available.

I've located some estimates well in excess of the numbers that you've
cited, but the data is several years old.

Would data from a few years ago (i.e., 2000 or 2001) be acceptable?

Yes, data from 2000-2001 is acceptable.

Older stock market data is acceptable but please state the year if possible so
that I can restate it in 2004 terms.

Hello.

From a 2001 article:

"Worldwide, the global capital commons now includes approximately $60
trillion in assets that have been securitized as stocks, bonds, and
the like."

Also see a December 2001 white paper from State Street, citing World Bank data:

"Total Global Securities Market Capitalization"

1990: $23.9 trillion
1995: $40.2 trillion
1999: $65.8 trillion
2005: $105.5 trillion (estimated)

A 1999 McKinsey Quarterly report estimated the world's liquid
financial assets in 2000 to be $78 trillion.
See "Getting to Global," The McKinsey Quarterly
http://www.glreach.com/eng/ed/art/getting-to-global.html

Notice in Exhibit 3, McKinsey breaks down that $78 trillion as follows:

21% money supply (= $16 trillion)
39% bonds (= $30 trillion)
40% equities (stocks) ($31 trillion)

The McKinsey figures are consistent with an estimate from a Salomon
Smith Barney estimate quoted in the Christian Science Monitor, June
12, 2000:

"Value of stocks worldwide reached $32.94 trillion,"
http://search.csmonitor.com/durable/2000/06/12/p20s1.htm

Keep in mind, of course, that markets peaked in 2000, so the estimates
dropped in subsequent years.

search strategy:
"stocks worldwide" trillion
worldwide stock, trillion
world, "market capitalization", trillion
etc.

I hope this helps. If anything needs clarification or amplification,
please let me know. Thanks.
