I would like information about the distribution of engine lifetimes
for a Toyota Camry, in number of miles.  An expected value (average
value) might also work, but I want something that is from an actual,
cited statistical study.

Are there any good web resources or databases that contain statistical
information like this?  I have questions like this all the time.

The state of California has says the average "useful life of a
vehicle" (regardless of make or model) is 120,000 miles. Some states
determine it to be 100,000 miles. These numbers are from my knowledge
of the "Lemon Law" statutes, where a customer is responsible for a
mileage usage fee based on their use out of this useful life.

Toyota vehicles are built with the highest standards of quality.
Toyota is famous for continuously improving upon its innovative
manufacturing processes and products.

I have heard of Toyota engines (I don't remember the models)
legitimately lasting over a million miles. It is not uncommon to
obtain 200,000 miles or more out of a Toyota. I have also heard (I
don't know if this is true) that they pulled the commercials that used
to show customers with their high mileage vehicles because some
customers were *angry* that they only got 200,000 miles out of their
vehicle, when the "guy on the commercial got 300,000". They felt that
ALL Toyota vehicles should last that long. Of course, with any kind of
machine, things happen, and they don't all last forever.

Just remember, the best way to maximize the life of your engine is to
perform regular maintenance; changing the oil and filter at scheduled
intervals.
