I want to verify source of this quote: "Nein, dis battery ist unser!"
I think it may be from Bruce Caton's book,"The Army of the Potomac:
Glory Road" (cannot verify it myself due to a vision problem).
It would be found in the the Battle of Gettysburg chapter describing
the action on the first day of the battle.

Hello.

I've located a source for the quotation.

'As his infantry got onto the top of the hill, Early began to move
some artillery forward. The Confederate pieces opened up. A heated
hand-to-hand fight developed in the cemetery as Union gunners tried to
beat off Confederate infantrymen. Placing his hand on a piece, one
triumphant Rebel is supposed to have yelled, "This battery's ours!"
only to receive the guttural reply, "Nein, dis battery is unseres!"'

"The Gettysburg Campaign: June-July 1863" by Albert A. Nofi,
read using "search inside" on Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0938289837/

---------

search strategy:
amazon.com "nein dis battery"

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick response. I could get by with it as it is the
same quote but it is not the same source I origanally used for a book
I am writing and I like mine better. If you can find the origianal, I
would prefer it. Here it is in its entirety. Are you able to check
"Glory Road" by Bruce Catton?

==============
"A Confederate officer charging up the hill, ahead of his men and
proud to be the first to reach a Union gun position, brandished his
sword and declared, ?This battery is ours!? A stubborn Teutonic
defender gave the officer a savage blow with his cannon sponge staff,
knocking him senseless. The last thing the Confederate heard was,
?Nein, dis battery ist unser?

Unfortunately, the "search inside" feature is unavailable from "Glory
Road." http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0844667900/

If you give me an approximate idea of your location, I could try to
find a library near you that has the book. Let me know if there's
anything else I can do for you. Thanks.

Rhav --

I have a copy of Catton's "Glory Road" and have checked chapter 6,
"End and Beginning," which covers the Battle of Gettysburg. No where
in the chapter do I see reference to the quotation that Juggler-GA
confirmed for you.

Best regards,
