Question ID: 343517
I would like to know how easy or difficult it is to rent or buy used
single engine planes in India for Private Pilots?
What are the companies/websites that rent or sell used single engine
planes in India?
Preferrable single engine planes would be Cessna 172, Cessna 180s &
Piper Cherokees.
A flyable Cessna 172 in the US can be easily bought for USD 40,000 -
USD 60,000. Also it can be rented from anywhere between $65-$110 per
hour. I basically want to know what this range in India is & is it
easy to get access to a single engine plane for a Private Pilot?

Dear Dagasden,

India has some of the strictest laws for flying planes. The detailed
regulations for Civil Aviation requirements are available with
Director General, Civil Aviation India:
http://dgca.nic.in/rules/car-ind.htm

If you hold an international pilot license then please refer to regulations at:
http://dgca.nic.in/licencing/lic-rule-ind.htm

All the scheduled operators and nonscheduled operators etc. are listed at:
http://dgca.nic.in/operator/sch-ind.htm

The operators with a Cessna plane are:
Asia Aviation Ltd.
Thapar House 124 Janpath New Delhi-110001
Phone: 011-23368361

RC Aviation India Pvt. Ltd.
http://www.rcaviationindia.com
During office hours (09:45 hrs. to 18:00 hrs.)
Tel. Nos. +91 - 22 5660 9840/1/4 / 5660 9999 / 2492 1917 (D)
Fax Nos. +91 - 22 - 2493 9036 / 2492 5084

After office hours & Saturdays,Sundays & Holidays
Mobile + 91 98200 70 514 (24 hrs.) / +91 98200 70 509 (24 hrs.)
Res. No. +91 - 22 - 2534 0251
Email: pkratta@raymondindia.com , millionairmt@raymondindia.com

These have a Cessna plane but they are only academies:
Ahemdabad Aviation Academy
Century Textiles and Industries Ltd.
MP Flying Club Ltd. Indore
Orient Flying School
Rajputana Aviation Academy P. Ltd.

Rules for charter operations are also available at:
http://dgca.nic.in/operator/sch-ind.htm

It also lists type and number of planes that each company manages.

Hope that helps!

Kapil,
thanks for the prompt response...but it does not answer my question.
I did have access to DGCA's website & list of flying clubs/operators
in India. However, what I was specifically looking for is:
1) Any company/website that sells used single engine planes in India?
I can give you examples of such websites in the US, for instance,
www.tradeaplane.com, www.barnstormers.com, etc.
2) Is renting single engine planes a common practice in India? For how
much & from where can I rent a Cessna 172 or similar planes?

Dear Dagasden,

Thanks for posting a clarification request.
The indicative tariff for renting a Cessna 172 are around Rs.8,000/-
(around $186) per hour. You can refer to
http://www.rcaviationindia.com/tariff.htm for indicative tariff
details.

Renting Cessna planes is quite common with executives and travellers.
During election season (like now), they are being actively used by
politicians to campaign.

These are some of the used plane dealers in India:
http://www.aerotraderonline.com/dealer.html?2750762
http://www.aerotraderonline.com/dealer.html?2750764

With liberalization and globalization, there are no restrictions on
buying any plane from across the world. However, getting permission to
fly is extremely difficult. Flying clubs and individuals across the
country have many planes that do not have a certificate of
airworthiness and are not allowed to fly.

I think renting a plane will be the most comfortable thing to do.

Hope that helps!

Kapil,
The Rs.8000/hour tarrif that you got from RC Aviation's website is
for a chartered plane - with the pilot. However, I am looking for
rental rates and places that rent single engine planes without the
pilot for Private flying. Also, the aerotraderonline is once again a
US website. I wanted to get a feel of how old single engine planes are
priced in India, which this website does not provide. If you refer to
my original question, I am looking for a price range for buying let's
say a Cessna172 in India. I can get such a range in the US by going to
tradeaplane.com and looking at prices that people are asking for their
planes.

Dear Dagasen,

Nice hearing from you again!

One cannot hire used planes in India except from providers that are
licensed to provide charter services by DGCA. There are only two of
them: RC Aviation and Asia Aviation that have a Cessna plane. Piper
Cherkoees are not approved by DGCA and hence can't fly in India.

You will have to contact these two operators only for procuring a
Cessna plane for personal flying. You can also confirm the costs of
having a plane without a pilot from them.

Please refer to:
http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story.php?content_id=45395

If one has a flying license in other country that will have to be
first converted to India as per DGCA rules before the operators will
rent a plane without a license. Please see:
http://dgca.nic.in/aic/aic13-91.htm

I had listed you the used plane dealers in India that were mentioned
online for your reference as well.

Hope that helps!

Dagasden --

Kapilr-GA's comment "India has some of the strictest laws for flying
planes" is an understatement.

I might suggest Reed Prior's detailed comments on his trip through
India with a Mooney in this excellent website of his (click through
the itinerary):
http://www.priortrip.com/

As you might expect, the International Aircraft Owners & Pilots
Association (IAOPA) has tried to encourage loosening of the Indian
controls on civil aircraft:
http://www.iaopa.org/

Several years ago I had the chance to hear Margrit Waltz, a well-known
ferry pilot describe her experiences in India. She said at the time
that it was one place where she'd prefer not to return, as on approach
into a major city the air traffic controllers -- who wanted to go home
-- simply told her that the airport was closed. This isn't an India
resource but has a little bit about the life of a ferry pilot:
