Hi nltlu,
The question you have posed appears to be a common one among Misfits
fans. The most common and widely regarded answer is that it is a
reference to George Lucas? first sci-fi movie ?THX-1138?.
"People come up with all sorts of crazy ideas-some say '138' is the
New Jersey police code for homicide, or '138' was the sum of the
Misfits' ages when the song was written (their ages 20 years later
don't even reach 138!), or even that the song is about sex (138 = 2 x
69).
These are all interesting theories, but I know the real story...and you should too.
Simply enough, "We Are 138" is a sci-fi song, based heavily on George
Lucas' first sci-fi movie "THX-1138." It's about a time in the future
when people are known by numbers instead of names.
Consider the lyrics:
"Do you think we're robot clean...
Does this face look almost mean...
Is it time to be an android, not a man?"
Not convinced? Read what The Misfits themselves have to say. Jerry
has answered the question many times. Below is part of an interview
by Chris Schneberger form July '96:
Chris: What is the true meaning behind '138'?
Jerry: '138' is like people being treated as androids where you have a
number instead of a name, so it's like the human number would be 138.
Chris: Was that in a movie?...George Lucas' first film?..."THX-1138"?
Jerry: There you go. But I mean, it's taken from that and that's
pretty much what it is. We had buttons made once, they were robots
with '138' that looked half human/android kinda things, long before
your Terminator or stuff like that. It's a really good song, I mean,
'138', it's great all the way around.
Former guitarist Bobby Steele had an interesting twist on this story:
"This has got to be Glenn's biggest joke on his fans. He told me it
was from the book "I, Robot" and that there was a character named
'138' in it. We used to have badges with a picture of a robot with
'138' on his forehead. I wonder is Jerry has one, or remembers it. I
have the book, but there is no such character. It just shows the
occasional brilliance of the guy (Glenn Danzig). This'll keep people
talking for years. He used to tell us that if someone asked what it
meant, we should just laugh, and in a mocking tone say 'What? you
don't know?'"
What other significance does '138' have? The Misfits played their
138th show in Spain during their European tour in March '96. You can
also find many '138' references hidden throughout George Lucas'
movies. Watch "Star Wars", "Return of the Jedi", or "Phantom Menace"
closely and you might be surprised what you find. As an interesting
side note, there was even a special celebratory 138th episode of The
Simpsons. Perhaps even Matt Groening is a fiend??

"Based on George Lucas's 1971 science fiction film THX-1138, this song
reflects the anonymity attached to living with a number for a name in
a 25th century police state.
On July 1, 1996 Bobby Steele e-mailed the following to the Misfits Bible:
"We used to have badges with a picture of a robot with 138 on his
forehead. I wonder if Jerry has one, or remembers it... He [Glenn]
used to tell us that if someone asked what it meant, we should just
laugh, and in a mocking tone say "What? You don't know?" and sound
real snobby when you say it. Make them feel like every idiot but YOU
knows what it means."
