Howdy mosaicmama-ga,
No matter how efficient the recycler, some of your computer will end up in
a landfill. Instead of "recycling" your computer, why don't you donate it to
Goodwill? I have seen 10 year old, and even older, systems in their stores.
Some computerist might find the parts of use, for instance, and there is more.
From the Goodwill web site.
http://www.goodwill.org/index_gii.cfm/1131/
"At Goodwill, 85 percent of our revenues are funneled directly back into our
employment and training programs. Goodwill is consistently ranked among top
charities that make your donation go further."
The Dallas area Goodwill web site is here.

Details on their 23 Dallas area donation centers is here.

You can find locations of the donation centers here.

Here are their donation center location just in Dallas itself, but they have
some that might be closer to where you are, so you might want to check the web
page referenced above.

Even if they can't place it in one of their stores, they will in turn, try
to recycle it, so you accomplish your goal on that front as well.
http://www.goodwilldallas.org/donations2.html
"If electronic items do not work, we do not repair them like we did in the
past, but rather separate out the materials (metal, plastic, etc.) to recycle
or we auction the items to dealers who will repair them."
Either way, the donation goes to good use.
http://www.goodwilldallas.org/about.html
"Donated Goods program offers employment through the recycling of over 26
million pounds of donated clothing and household items each year. Disabled
and disadvantaged employees assist with the collection, processing and sale
of goods."
You might even qualify for a tax deduction!
http://www.goodwill.org/index_gii.cfm/1453/
"If you itemize deductions on your federal tax return, you are entitled to
claim a charitable deduction for your Goodwill donations."
Some people might suggest schools, etc. but if it is an older computer, most
schools, etc. will not find it of any use.
If you need any clarification, feel free to ask.
Search Strategy
I have bought all sorts of "obsolete" computers in Goodwill over the years
and have used them quite productively for experimentation, etc.
