There was a website that detailed the similarities between the album
covers of U2 and the Beatles. For example, The Joshua Tree and Rubber
Soul; Pop and Let it Be. I don't know what the URL was though.

Where is this website now?

Milesw-ga got more than half-way to the answer, but missed a step that
would have got him to a version of the U2-Beatles site with images of
the album covers. (I would split the proceeds of the answer with
milesw-ga if I could; perhaps I'll be able to repay the favor on a
future question.)

The Internet Archive's Wayback Machine has 4 versions of the old
"Ethereal Connection" web site. (To find the 4 versions on the
Wayback Machine, search for http://www.trcom.com/u2beatles/; you'll
get 5 results, two of which are the same.) Milesw-ga gave the link to
the last version, which, like versions 2 and 3, does not contain
images. However, version 1 (listed twice by the Wayback machine),
from May 28, 1997, has pictures of all of the album covers.

Version 1 is:
The Ethereal Connection
http://web.archive.org/web/19970528202622/http://www.trcom.com/u2beatles/

Click "Enter" twice to get to the main page (
http://web.archive.org/web/19970528211528/www.trcom.com/u2beatles/frame.htm
). Then you can click on "Click Here" to see the pages in sequence,
or on the categories in the column on the left side to view the pages
in the order you want. (I think that you need frames capability in
your browser to have both options for viewing the pages.) The column
on the left side also has links to a page of comments (called "Feed
Me") and of links.

Alternatively, if you want to see the pages in Spanish, click "Enter"
on the initial page, then "haz click aquí" on the second page, and
then "Enter" on the third page. The main page in Spanish (
http://web.archive.org/web/19970528215913/www.trcom.com/u2beatles/frames.htm
) will look the same as the page in English, except that you can click
"Haz Click aquí" to see the pages in sequence in Spanish.

And now the main question is: can anyone find a connection between a
U2 album cover and the street-crossing cover of "Abbey Road"?

I forgot to mention that the address of the Wayback Machine is
http://www.archive.org/index.html .

Yep, that's the one! And to answer your question:

And now the main question is: can anyone find a connection between a
U2 album cover and the street-crossing cover of "Abbey Road"?

goto:

http://www.geocities.com/let_it_pop/all_that_abbey_road

which will tell you the similarities between All That You Can't Leave
Behind and Abbey Road. Click on the next button at the bottom of the
page to get some miscellaneous "coincidences" as well.

Well done to both of you.

Here it is, thanks to our friends at the Way Back Machine:

http://web.archive.org/web/19990203211357/www.trcom.com/u2beatles/

All of the text is still available, though the images mostly are not.
The site is a bit confusing at first; you'll need to press the "Enter"
graphic on the first 3 pages to finally get to the meat which is found
at:

Search term on Google Groups:
