I remember reading this article in Time Magazine (Australia) about how to get the most out of using Google. It had tips on advanced searches and filtering unnecessary matches. Which issue was it, and/or where can I get a copy of this article? |

Hi markabe, thanks for your question. I am fairly certain that the article you are looking for is "Gaga Over Google: After years of searching, I fell in love with the clever little search engine that everybody's talking about" by Anita Hamilton. It was originally in Time on March 20, 2000, v.155 i1 p.95. Due to copyright restrictions I cannot provide you with the full article, however, you should be able to use this to locate the magazine at your local public library. I will include the paragraph with tips to help you verify that this is indeed the article you are searching for. "Brin shared a few search tips with me. If you are looking for a precise phrase or name, put quotes around it. If you run across a link to "page missing," just click the CACHED button below each listing to retrieve an earlier copy of the page saved to Google's server. And if you see a link that looks especially useful, click on the GOOGLESCOUT button for more like it." I subscribe to the SearchDay newsletter which you might find useful for tips on searching with Google and other search engines and how to use them. Archived issues of SearchDay are available at Search Engine Watch's website. They also have a free monthly newsletter, Search Engine Watch, if you aren't interested in daily tips. http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/ I hope this is the article you were looking for and you are able to locate a copy at your local library. I accessed a periodical database called InfoTrac which the state library subscribes to and provides to all school and public libraries in my state. You might learn that you can access a similar online database with your library card. (Please don't think I'm a paid advertisement for public libraries! I just like to remind people that there's a source that they've already paid for which will provide them with a wide range of information!) :) Good luck and happy searching! Regards, readersguide | |

Although the issue of Time Australia containing the article wasn't found, I found bhamwhiz-ga's comments most helpful. Thanks to all who participated. |

You can search for past articles on http://www.time.com. Most of the times the article appear in multiple country editions, so you need not be very concerned about the country. And, in anycase this article seems to be country independent. :-) This link will give you a list of all articles in Time Mag on Google. The first one seems to be the one you seem to be looking for. http://www.time.com/time/searchresults?summaries=yes&search_type=simple&query=google&venue=time Hope this helps --J |
