I remember reading this article in Time Magazine (Australia) about how
to get the most out of using Google. It had tips on advanced searches
and filtering unnecessary matches.

Which issue was it, and/or where can I get a copy of this article?

Hi markabe, thanks for your question.

I am fairly certain that the article you are looking for is "Gaga Over
Google: After years of searching, I fell in love with the clever
little search engine that everybody's talking about" by Anita
Hamilton. It was originally in Time on March 20, 2000, v.155 i1 p.95.

Due to copyright restrictions I cannot provide you with the full
article, however, you should be able to use this to locate the
magazine at your local public library.

I will include the paragraph with tips to help you verify that this is
indeed the article you are searching for.

"Brin shared a few search tips with me. If you are looking for a
precise phrase or name, put quotes around it. If you run across a link
to "page missing," just click the CACHED button below each listing to
retrieve an earlier copy of the page saved to Google's server. And if
you see a link that looks especially useful, click on the GOOGLESCOUT
button for more like it."

I subscribe to the SearchDay newsletter which you might find useful
for tips on searching with Google and other search engines and how to
use them. Archived issues of SearchDay are available at Search Engine
Watch's website. They also have a free monthly newsletter, Search
Engine Watch, if you aren't interested in daily tips.

I hope this is the article you were looking for and you are able to
locate a copy at your local library. I accessed a periodical database
called InfoTrac which the state library subscribes to and provides to
all school and public libraries in my state. You might learn that you
can access a similar online database with your library card. (Please
don't think I'm a paid advertisement for public libraries! I just like
to remind people that there's a source that they've already paid for
which will provide them with a wide range of information!)

:)

Good luck and happy searching!

readersguide

I went through Time March 20, 2000 edition, and it wasn't there. I
also tried March 13 and 27, just in case, but still no luck.

Please keep in mind that I get the Australian edition.

If you give me a way to contact you, I can email you the entire
article. Again, due to copyright restriction, it cannot be posted on
Google. I have access to an online database of articles and will send
this one to you so you don't have to continue to search.

After reading the articles online, I am certain that "Gaga Over
Google" by Anita Hamilton is not the article I read. If I'm right,
Anita does a small column near the end of Time, whereas the article I
read was in the main section of the magazine.

The article seems to be a combination of "Search Smarter" at

http://www.onmagazine.com/on-mag/magazine/article/0,9985,178546-1,00.html

and "Secrets of Google"

http://www.onmagazine.com/on-mag/magazine/article/0,9985,178548,00.html

both of which I found from bhamwhiz-ga's comment.

Even though I couldn't remember them initially, I recognize the author
boasting about the ability to find anything on the web from "Search
Smarter", as well as the tip from "Secrets of Google" about doing an
image search.

However, I do remember reading this originally in Time magazine, and
in any case, we do not have ON magazine in Australia.

Any idea which issue of Time Australia this multi-page article was in?

Hello markabe,

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any additional articles
about Google in Time magazine. (Other than the one listed above and
the additional one that bhamwhiz referred you to before I posted this
answer.)

I understand that you are looking for that specific article, so you
may want to ask Google-answers to repost your question and see if any
Australian researchers can locate the specific article you are looking
for.

Request for reposting of question should go to
mailto:answers-editors@google.com .

While you are waiting for that process to happen, however, I found
several additional articles which do give tips and hints on using
google. They are listed below. I hope that something will be of use to
you while you wait to turn up the particular article you are looking
for.

Although the issue of Time Australia containing the article wasn't
found, I found bhamwhiz-ga's comments most helpful. Thanks to all who
participated.

You can search for past articles on http://www.time.com. Most of the
times the article appear in multiple country editions, so you need not
be very concerned about the country. And, in anycase this article
seems to be country independent. :-)

This link will give you a list of all articles in Time Mag on Google.
The first one seems to be the one you seem to be looking for.

Hope this helps
