Myoken is the Japanese deity you are looking for. He is the god,
bosatsu or bodhisattva of the Pole Star/Great Bear/Big Dipper
constellation. His name means ?wondrous seeing? and he is linked to
prevention and cure of eye diseases. He is also associated with
lengthening the life span, averting disaster and protecting those on
sea voyages.

These websites tell you a little about him

http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~QM9T-KNDU/ryukoji.htm

You will find pictures of Myoken here
http://reikihistory.topcities.com/Ancestors.html
http://campross.crosswinds.net/Tendai.html

He is the first picture on the Tendai site. Hold your mouse over it to
see the caption.

He seems to be particularly linked to the Nichiren sect in Japanese
Buddhism and with a temple in Kyoto called Myoken-ji. See

There are several shrines in Japan to Myoken including Ise, Yatushiro,
Hoshida, Chichiba and Soma. There is a festival at Haramuchi
involving flags of a Myoken shrine. See

Hope this is what you wanted. And thank-you for sending me on an
interesting journey. I enjoyed doing the research.

Didn't have time to add my search strategy. I started with *Japanese
buddhism deities eye diseases* and then used Myoken and Myoken shrine
to find out more.

I am aware of a godess whose diety is to protect women from eye
diseases. The name is not even close, but could that be what you
meant?
