I am looking for the title/author of a book I read as a child.

The plot concerned the stone of scone - the "real" one, not the one
the English took to Westminster but one which was jewelled precious
etc and that the Scots had hidden away. The main character was a girl
and she had two magical helpers "Fidach" and "Fotla" that I think were
related to magic stones and were rather horse-like I remember.

Not had much succes finding it on amazon or abe or other search
engines and would love to get hold of it once again

Many thanks

In approximately what year did you read this book? A range of
possible years (e.g., 1970-75, 1982-86, etc.) would help.

children's department of a british library. hope that's helps

When did the story take place? Was there any element of time travel?

Although the story started in the present the protagonist was involved
in saving the stone in the past - I'm not sure if this was time travel
or a dream sequence thing.

Could it be "Beadbonny Ash" (1973)?

"Disturbed by the death of her father, Birdie (Bridie?) retreats into
the world of sixth-century Scotland with its atmosphere of
superstition, intrigue, and terror...
...Juvenile imaginative fiction set around the Dark Ages in Oban, Mull
and Oban in Western Scotland.

Thus far, I haven't been able to determine whether the Stone of Scone
is involved in this story, but the historical period and regions
mentioned are definitely associated with the Stone of Scone.

Moreoever, the 1973 publication date is consistent with your recollection.

What do you think?

Well done -

I don't think it's Beadbonny Ash but looking up the author I've found
she also wrote "Singing Stones" - which IS the one. Slightly worrying
as it stated it was published in 1986 - I would have had to do some
time-travelling myself - but looks like this was re-issue and a
hardback version was out in 1970. Just about to order a copy of it.

I'm highly impressed!

Here's the book description:

Book Description: London, Bodley Head, 1986. Soft wraps, VG, minor
corner crease on front, contents just yellowing round pge edges
otherwise fine. A nice reading copy. As Christie holds the two small
green stones, carved with curious Pictish beasts, she begins to hear
music, a high, reedy singing that draws her back into Scotland's
Celtic past. Through the magic of the singing stones, the legendary
story of Scotland's ancient carved coronation stone unfolds to
Christie, and she is caught up in an adventure, part real, part
fantasy, as the elemental forces of the past begin to stir once more.

Hi.

Okay, then, we'll post Ms Finlay's earlier book as the official answer.

Singing Stones (1970)
Winifred Finlay

"As Christie holds the two small green stones, carved with curious
Pictish beasts, she begins to hear music, a high, reedy singing that
draws her back into Scotland's Celtic past. Through the magic of the
singing stones, the legendary story of Scotland's ancient carved
coronation stone unfolds to Christie, and she is caught up in an
adventure, part real, part fantasy, as the elemental forces of the
past begin to stir once more."
