I would like a crime rate comparison between the 48240 and 48209 zip
codes (Detroit, MI and Redford, MI). But not just Detroit and Redford.
Those Zip codes specifically. Preferrably from last year to 10 years
ago.

Streppa --

This took a little work to get the data cut as finely as you'd like.
The FBI provides excellent crime statistics with it's long-standing
Uniform Crime Bulletin (UCB) program. However, it isn't cut finely
enough for your needs, as it includes major cities and states and
doesn't go down to the zip code level in publications available on the
Internet:
FBI
"Uniform Crime Reports" (1995-2003)
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm

Yahoo! provides pages allowing you to search for aggregate crime
numbers by zip code. Because this is "secondary" data (summarized
from another source) it's difficult to know precisely what it covers.
For example Detroit data may include other zip codes, even though the
search is ONLY for the 48209 zip:

Yahoo!
Neighborhood Profiles
http://realestate.yahoo.com/re/neighborhood/main.html

Yahoo! Real Estate
"Redford, MI 48240"
http://realestate.yahoo.com/re/neighborhood/search.html?sa=&csz=48240&submit=Submit

"Detroit, MI 48209"
http://realestate.yahoo.com/re/neighborhood/search.html?sa=&csz=48209&submit=Submit

Yahoo! keeps its material current, but there's an Internet source
called the Internet Archive that has old versions of the Yahoo pages:
Internet Archive
"Wayback Machine"
http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

The data is there from the Yahoo! pages going back to 1998, but the
crime statistics are reported in a summary fashion by city -- and not
by zip code - back in 1998:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://realestate.yahoo.com/

One other note: there's a site called City-Data.com that has a good
wrap-up of city data, though it unfortunately doesn't include crime
data. Here's the entire list for the state of Michigan:
City-Data.com
"Michigan Bigger Cities"
http://www.city-data.com/city/Michigan.html

This excellent California State University/Northridge page has a
complete list of statistics available by zip code (though they
obviously don't cover the range of private data services like
Claritas), including other resources for ferreting out data:
Calstate Northridge
"Community Information by Zip Code"
http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

Having worked with my local police department, I'm sure that you can
find detailed zip code reporting of crimes -- but will probably have
to contact local police departments to get it. The advantage is that
they will have a good time series going back decades.

Google search strategy:
FBI + "crime statistics" + "zip code"
Site search at these two Michigan resources:
  http://www.umich.edu
  http://www.michigan.gov/
