grannysmith,

A few questions, if you please:

- What version of Adobe Illustrator are you using?
- Is this on a Macintosh or Windows PC?
- What version of the operating system are you running?
- What kind of ribbons are you thinking of: bows, banners, streamers, etc.?

Thanks,
huntsman

I'm using Illustrator 10 on a Mac running OS9 (currently--waiting for
Quark to make the switch to X). I'd like to be able to do all of the
types of ribbons you listed: bows, banners, streamers, etc. I would
think that you would use the same basic technique for all of them??

Hi, Grannysmith,

I couldn't find specific tutorials for Illustrator to create the
objects you're looking for, however,
http://studio.adobe.com/learn/tips/index.html?product=illustrator&topic=illustration_drawing
(requires registration, but it's free) has some tutorials on how to
use the tools themselves.

And http://www.tiemdesign.com/HOWTO/Illustrator.htm has a number of
Illustrator tutorials, and private forums for requesting a specific
kind of tutorial.

http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/illustratortuts/ is a list of more
tutorials for Illustrator 10. It has a LOT of cookies, however, so be
warned, and a couple of popups. The tutorials there also focus on
using the tools.

As Illustrator is used more in the professional realm, tutorials and
books lean toward how to use the tools rather than how to build
specific objects.

In order to make those types of images, in general, the simplest way
would be to create the shapes with the path tool (or modify existing
shapes with their nodes), then use gradient fills to get the effect
you're looking for.

I only have v. 9 on my iBook, otherwise I'd outline the exact steps
for you. The basic steps (make shape, fill with gradient fill) would
apply to any version, I think.
