I need to know the number of endotrachael intubations performed in the
US in one year.

I saw that you did some excellent research in this area before. Can
you please help!

Here are the four data points I need - and again I will provide a tip
too if you can help to pull it all together.

Number of total general surgery procedures performed in a year in the
US (Needs to be from year 2000 or later). I will take some
percentage of this number.

Number of ICU patients per year in the US. Would be good if this were
for the same year as the number of general surgery procedures. (Needs
to be from year 2000 or later, too.) I will also take some percentage
of this number.

Annual number of bronchosopy procedures performed in a year in the US

Annual number is intubations performed by emergency people, like
EMT's, fire fighters, and anyone else in this category.

Please ask any question that you would like!!

As you know, entotrachael intubation (opening an airway by insertion
of a tube or other medical device)is performed for one of three areas:

1)Emergency Medicine - to open the air way due to something getting
stuck in the throat, the throat swelling shut due to an allergic
reaction, or due to trauma such as the throat getting smashed in an
accident. The EMERGENCY procedures could take place in an Emergency
Room or outside the hospital, like in response to an accident by an
emergency medical technician in an ambulance.

2)Intensive Care - to open an airway for patients in a coma or those
who are anesthetized.

3) For medical procedures such as the delivery of a bronchoscope for
investigation of the lungs or therapeutic devices such as stenting of
the bronchi.

I need to know the approximate TOTAL number of procedures that are
performed. I know that the CDC says that in 2002 there were 317,000
performed in Emergency Rooms in the US. I do not know about the other
areas.

What ever other numbers you can provide, to piece this total number
together, are very helpful!!

I think the best way might be to get the general numbers for the
procedures that I list above, and then I will estimate from there. If
you have any other idea, or can find that actual number somewhere, I
would certainly be grateful!!!

Dear Umiat,

Thank you for your help! Let me know what you do find, and we can see
what is possible to put together. I just need to have some idea about
how many endotrachael intubations are performed, by "cobbeling
together" some statistics. Thank you again for your offer to help!!
I am confident we will find something!

Nancy
