In "Rio Lobo," John Wayne plays a former Union officer who teams up
with two former Confederate soldiers in order to hunt down a ruthless
traitor.

"The time is just after the end of the Civil War. Wayne is Union
Colonel Cord McNally, who is teamed with two Confederate soldiers he
captured during the war in order to take down a thieving bootlegger.
Their travels take them to a small town being held in terror by an
evil Sheriff. McNally and his crew decide to help the townspeople with
their own brand of justice."

Does this sound like your movie?

the unholy alliance sounds correct, but i believe the team was formed
for as long as it would take to go after some person(s) ,or something,
after which all bets were off. At points of contention between the
parties during the journey, hostilities were halted and someone would
utter the phrase "until the enemy is ours" with the appropriate
pregnant pause following. The phrase is the important content.
