Question ID: 345771
I own a small silver jewelry store and need to purchase a cash
register-based POS (point of sale) computer program which uses
barcodes to help me manage / track / order inventory in order to run
the business more easily & profitably. There are LOTS of companies out
there selling POS programs! I'm not very computer savy, so I need help
determining which program to buy.

The program does not necessarily have to be jewelry specific, as mine
is not a traditional fine jewelry store, i.e., we do not make or
repair jewelry so we don't need to price or track repairs, special
orders, etc. Ours is a basic retail operation--we buy stuff and we
sell stuff!

In determing which company and program to go with, my main concerns are as follows:

A) The program should be well tested (so not a brand new company or
program), reliable, and not prone to softare related "bugs", crashes,
or freezing up.
B) The program needs to be intuitive and easy to use; most importantly
it needs to be easy to train non-computer savy employees to use.
C) The program needs to link with either Quickbooks or Peachtree for
accounting purposes.
D) A program backed up by reasonably priced customer support; it would
be even better it the program supported a web-based user's group where
a user could ask other users for help and advice.

Finally, I'm interested in the pros & cons of using a MAC-based
program versus a traditional PC-based program. I understand that there
will be more choices and companies selling PC systems, but I wonder if
they will be as secure (immune to hacking & viruses) and as easy to
use/learn as a MAC system?

NOTE: I am aware of the info. at
tnpi.biz/computing/mac/reviews/pos/shtml (I think that's the correct
address!) so please find alternative/additional information!

I've never used this forum before, so I'm looking forward to seeing
how well this works. Also, I'm unsure of how to price this question;
however, if I get an answer that truly helps me make a decision I'll
be willing to add a tip. Not only am I looking for information to help
me make a decision, I'm looking for advice on which program to
purchase!

There has been no action--answers or comments--on this question, so
either a) I'm not offering to pay enough, b) I'm not wording/asking
the question in the best way, or c) no one on this site feels
qualified to anwer or research this question. I'm sure the real reason
must be choice a, so researchers, answer this question--how much would
I have to pay for you to answer this question?

OK, perhaps I am not offering to pay enough for someone to take the
time to research this topic for me; I'll up the price to $50.00, and I
still may offer a tip if I get help which actually helps me determine
which softare to buy.

One quick clarification: though I only have one store at this time, I
have plans for more, so this program would need to be able to be used
for multiple stores. Quickbooks offers a POS program, but someone told
me that it doesn't work for multiple locations; however, I don't know
whether they were correct or not.

I have raised my offering price to $85.00, so I hope this is enough to
get someone to answer my question!

Some additional comments:

1) I was told that Quickbooks does not support multi-store
applications, but I just learned that there is a Quickbooks Pro
Multi-Store version available.

2) I must be able to use a mobile handheld scanner that can be used to
walk around the store and quickly count inventory.

This is a question that's outside my areas of expertise, but I do
think you'd be more likely to attract Researchers if you raised your
price. You may want to review the Google Answers pricing guidelines:

http://answers.google.com/answers/pricing.html

As you can see, the minimum suggested price for complex, multi-part
questions is $50.

Few GA Researchers are doing this only for the money, but most of us
do evaluate the price in relation to the amount of time that a
question is likely to take to answer. The offer of a higher fee
definitely makes a question more attractive, particularly in a case
(such as yours) where the customer is articulate about his precise
needs.
