Dear surferxxx-ga, The data is provided by the European Commission - Languages in Europe web page. Graph showing % speaking English as a foreign language - approx. halfway down the page. http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/policies/lang/languages/lang/europeanlanguages_en.html#Multilingual This is a full list of all European Countries - see the original page for a guide to the abbreviations (Turkey was included in this Eurobarometer survey because its applicant status was being discussed at that time (2002)). Malta 84 DK 79 SE 76 NL 75 Cyprus 67 AT 55 FIN 50 LUX 46 Slovenia 46 D 44 BE 37 GR 36 FR 32 Estonia 29 IT 28 Czech R 24 Latvia 23 PT 22 Poland 21 Lithuania 20 Romania 18 ES 18 Bulgaria 14 Hungary 14 Slovakia 13 Turkey 10 IRL 3 UK 3 I hope this answers your question. If it does not, or the answer is unclear, then please ask for clarification of this research before rating the answer. I shall respond to the clarification request as soon as I receive it. Thank you answerfinder Search stratgey Went to the EU web site |

Answer is a good one. Although I scoured the EU website and managed to miss this!! I wanted to show (for a business related reason) that there were a similar per capita number of English speakers in Czech Republic to Poland and Romania and this shows it to be ahead of both so is great for my purposes....even though I suspect it isn't actually true! |

"UK 3"!!!! Professor Higgens has been proven correct! The English don't speak English! [Lest I be rudely corrected, I am aware that this is the "percentage of people speaking English AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE".] But it certainly looks wierd on a chart like this. |
