Dear smerahn-ga;
Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question.
This looks like a GREAT place to begin. I found this source to be
relatively straightforward in its explanation and descriptions of
FUNCTIONAL NEUROANATOMY:
BRAIN PLACE
http://www.brainplace.com/bp/atlas/ch3.asp
You can?t beat this as a source for fundamental explanations of brain
function not matter what the structure is. There is a search engine
that allows you to simply type in the structure and the results
provide links to illustrations, functionality, purpose, location and
more. It will even tell you what other animals possess this anatomical
structure and what function it plays in their anatomies:

As if this weren?t enough, you can also search the atlas of
illustrations and select the various regions of the brain in order to
browse the atlas:

I think you will also be impressed with this source:
NEUROANATOMY AND NEUROPATHOLOGY ON THE INTERNET

This is yet another EXCELLENT example of a site that offers
fundamental explanations of the functional regions of the brain.
Simply select a hemisphere and go on from there choosing the various
structures as you go:

Here are a number of atlases and other sources that have similar tools
and information about FUNCTIONAL NEUROANATOMY in varying degrees and
levels of academic understanding:

I?m going to throw these in just for good measure. If nothing more,
perhaps you can recommend them to your attendees for their own future
reference. I have not read them personally but I examined their sample
content and reviews. They appear to be of the academic level you
mentioned:

ATLAS OF FUNCTIONAL NEUROANATOMY
By: Walter J Hendleman
ISBN : 0-849-31177-2

Review: ?I have been hunting for a concise and clear atlas that would
help me visualize the brain in 3-D. Atlases I used in medical school
were 2-D too detailed disjointed and left alot to the imagination as
to how the brain parts fit togther as a whole. This book takes the
guess work out of that and is a text as well as an atlas. It uses
airbrush pictures to help with visualization. In addtion it has the
added bonus of including a CD-ROM. It is a delight to read and in only
minutes a day I am gaining a whole new understanding of the brain. The
pages are printed on high quality paper and you can easily use colored
markers to color in any part of the brain you wish. There is even a
suggested color chart. I am a neurology resident and I am so glad I
found this book!!?

FUNCTIONAL NEUROANATOMY: TEXT AND ATLAS

Description: ?Superbly illustrated core textbook for medical and
health science students reinforces an understanding of basic
neuroanatomical structures by emphasizing their clinical significance
in neurologic disease. Abundant illustrations eliminate the need to
buy an atlas, as structure and function are reviewed in depth. Plus,
over 150 MR images give an excellent introduction to radiographic
neuroanatomy and the role it plays in clinical neurology. Two
accomplished teachers present just the right amount of material for
the busy student.?

CLINICAL NEUROANATOMY MADE RIDICULOUSLY SIMPLE (3rd Edition; Book & CD)
By: Stephen Goldberg
ISBN : 0-940-78057-7
http://www.bioinformatics.vg/Books/Book/Clinical_Neuroanatomy_Made_Ridiculously_Simple_3rd_Edition_Book_and_CD-ROM_0940780577.html
Review: ?Before this book I always had a hard time with Neuro. I just
got by when I took the class and I did below average on the subject on
step one. Before I took a rotation in Neuro I read this book and it
changed everything for me. Now I love to get neuro questions and I'm
much more secure about patients with neuro presentations. Although it
does not provide the detail as you would get from a comprehensive
book, it makes the basics and the most common problems very clear. The
CD is helpful and fun! It should be used along with the book; not just
at the end. The CD has many pictures (gross and drawings) that help to
visualize the neuro layout of the CNS. The great thing about this book
is that you can read and understand it in a couple days if you're
motivated.?

FUNCTIONAL NEUROANATOMY: AN INTERACTIVE TEXT AND MANUAL
By: Jeffrey T. Joseph, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
David L. Cardozo, Harvard Medical School
ISBN: 0-471-44437-5
http://he-cda.wiley.com/WileyCDA/HigherEdTitle/productCd-0471444375,courseCd-SI7000,pageType-copy,page-COLLEGE_FEATURES.html
Description: ?Taking a novel, highly interactive approach, Functional
Neuroanatomy emphasizes the conceptual and experimental foundations
needed to both comprehend neuroanatomy and apply it to clinical
problems. Coverage begins with an introduction to gross structures,
histological architecture, and imaging modalities. From there, a
systematic treatment of specific areas follows, with an emphasis on
explaining their interrelationships. Concluding chapters elegantly tie
together key concepts through a focus on system development and
trauma, with helpful appendices including a glossary and an atlas of
labeled gross structures and cross sections, and an introduction to
clinical brain imaging.
Rich in resources, this book relies on problems and exercises to
engage the student, providing numerous dissections, radiological
materials, histology of various neurological disorders, and clinical
case studies. Numerous instructive images appear throughout the text,
while a detailed discussion encompasses functional MRI, computed
tomography (CT), and digital subtraction angiography (DSA).
Clearly organized to provide a thorough understanding of the central
nervous system and its function, this manual stands alone as a
complete textbook in functional neuroanatomy for medical, graduate,
and advanced undergraduate students.?
