GOLF BALL(with a club} 2.A BASEBALL (with a bat) 3.AN ARROW SHOT
FROM A BOW, OR 4.A STONE FROM A WAR SLING LIKE DAVID USED TO SMITE
THE GIANT IN THE BIBLE.

On the fly? Or including the normal roll on a flat surface? Or can
we toss it off a mountainside? What altitude (there are known
distance factors for both baseballs and golf balls at altitudes of
5,000' to 6,000')?

Clarification of Question by mcisencraft-ga on 15 May 2004 12:17 PDT
CLARIFICATION TO omnivorous-ga.
1.Where the object strikes "on the fly" would be best. That way
odd-ball factors like a golfball skipping along the top of a frozen
ice pond vs. a baseball rolling better on asphalt would be eliminated.
2. No reason to "toss it off a mountain"
3. I you want to list the findings at 6,000 feet that is ok. If you
have found a database of some of the answers at 6,000 feet altitude
and some answers at sea level I will accept that and extrapolate the
result as best as I can.

Thankyou for you help on this project. McIsencraft

JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY DOES BOBBIE7 OR OMNIVORE GET THE CREDIT? THANKYOU. M.

Hello again Mcisencraft,

I?m glad that my research was useful!

Here is my estimate of what a human can propel the most distance based
on my research.

1. Bow and Arrow
2. Golf
3. Baseball
4. Slingshot

I based my estimate on the following numbers:

Bow and Arrow: 1410.87 meters = 1,542.95 Yards
Golf : 515 Yards = 515 Yards
Baseball: 734 feet = 244.67 Yards
Slingshot: 100 Yards = 100 Yards

Dear Mcisencraft,

Yes, Omnivorous and myself and perhaps other researchers were working
on your question; however researchers work on an individual basis.

The offical answer to your question is the result of my research.

If another researcher has something to add to my answer, they will
post it in the comments box.

Should you need further asistance, please ask.

Bobbie --

That sure looks like the answer to me.

For some impact of altitude, heat, humidity and other factors on
baseballs the following Google search strategy is relevant:
"the physics of baseball"

Robert Kemp Adair's book by that title is excellent and detailed but
there are several professors' web pages that do the subject justice.

I think I'd argue for the order: arrow, golf ball, sling, baseball.
In every projectile but the sling, omni's answer considers a distance
record, achieved by a top athlete. 240 yards is a phenomenal distance
to hit a baseball. Most people could not hit a baseball 100 yards.
But I believe with practice most people could throw a rock (perhaps
not one as large a baseball) over 100 yards with a sling. And I
wouldn't be surprised if a world-class athlete could throw a rock 300
yards or more that way. But the distance record for a sling doesn't
seem to be easy to find.

which To me, the answer submitted evades the question, which is: What
is the longest distance a human can propel an object? All the examples
quoted involve a mechanical contrivance. One might as well say pushing
a launch button on an ICBM is the record. How about this? What is the
longest distance a human can throw any object manually without any
help from an appliance?

A few points:
(there are no online references to this as far as I know):
The World Record for distance with a sling, according to the Guinness
Book of Records 1999, is held by David P. Engvall, who has propelled a
60 gram lead projectile 477 meters. For actual stone ammo, there are
reports of Tibetan native slingers reaching 300-yard distances,
quoted in the book 'Hunting weapons' by H.L. Blackmore. Clearly the
100 yard estimate is way too low, and the sling is the
second-farthest-propelling insrument in the list.

The world Flight Shooting record for a hand held bow and arrow is
1222.01 meters, shot by Don Brown using a 132 lbs. Harry Drake flight
bow, in 1987. The Foot bow record is 1854.40 m, held by Harry Drake
(1971), and the greatest distance ever shot with any type of
hand-operated bow and arrow is 1871.84 m, by Harry Drake using a
hand-cocked crossbow (1988). Only the first of these is the classic
bow and arrow, but all of them have been made by human muscle.

Oh, and Monroe-Ga:

The greatest distance anything has been thrown without any help from
an appliance is 385 meters, by the aforementioned David Engvall (also
in the Guinness Book of Records 1999). The 'thing' was a lead weight
that had a long string attached to it.

Or is it this:

http://www.baggressive.com/ld/content/stories.php?item=4
Manuel Schuetz has thrown a boomerang (and catched it) a distance of
238 meters, measured as a straight line from the thrower to the
farthest point in the flight path of the boomerang. Since the flight
path of a returning boomerang is roughly circular, the actual distance
traveled by the implement must be around 700 meters?

Have to disagree with you about the distance record, tuukka. An
aerobie has been thrown 1333 ft (406 meters).
