Was there a copyright notice on the original Mac ROM? If so, what did
it say in terms of date and holder?

Hello Laplace77,

For the "original" 128k Macintosh (released in 1984) - it might not be
possible to provide a firm answer without reference to a copy of the
ROM. I can provide an answer for a later machine - I have access to a
few older machines that I could probably view the ROM to get you an
answer. There are also a few pages indicating the copyright in a more
recent ROM. Would either be acceptable or do you need the answer for
that specific model?

Any Mac made before 1986 would be ok. I don't know all the details of
model types, but I do need an early pre-86 reference.

Hello Laplace77,

A good reference on models, their capabilities, etc. is at:
  http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_classic/index.html

The earliest reference w/ a firm date that I found on line was 1989.
Your need for "before 1986" would basically limit the answer to one of
the following models:
  Original Macintosh (128k)
  Macintosh 512k
  Macintosh XL (a Lisa w/ Macintosh ROM's)
and I don't have access to one of those machines nor a ROM image.
Perhaps another researcher does, but it may be pretty unlikely.

Screenshots of the 1.1g Finder (Macintosh 128k) and copyright notice
can be found at http://www.nd.edu/~jvanderk/sysone/ . The same site
hosts what purports to be an image of the 128k Classic ROM at
http://www.nd.edu/~jvanderk/sysone/vMac.ROM.sit.hqx , though traffick
in same is of questionable legal nature, and I can make no claim as to
its authenticity. (Obviously, the only way to be certain *and*
legally sound would be to find someone in physical posession of said
ROM, and the appropriate hardware to extract the information.)

Searching for Macintosh "easter egg" archives, and/or Finder
screenshots, may provide a more complete record of the evolution of
said notices.

Documentation of the physical printing on the ROM may be extracted
from http://www.digibarn.com/collections/parts/mac-prototype-boards/index.html
(ROMs the two chips at center above the MC68000 CPU with the gold
cap), however those are preproduction boards. A weak scan of the
production version may be found at
http://www.obsoletecomputermuseum.org/mac128/ , and one can only
assume that the 'curator' of said museum could be of assistance if you
cannot find a quicker route to your solution.

Historically-related information on the earlier Lisa ROM can be had at
http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~woz/bootrom.pdf .
