googlebrain is on to something. Visualize the older, alternate spelling for hemoptysis (listed above) as "haemoptysis" and then switch out the "h" for an "n" and the "e" for a "c" to get "nacmoptysis". h a e moptysis n a c moptysis A likely mixup if the entry was hand-written, especially by a doctor! "hemoptysis" from the Miller-Keane Medical Dictionary, 2000 (WebMD) http://my.webmd.com/content/asset/miller_keane_15312 -- mother |

Out of curiosity, I wondered if many typewriters were even around in 1880. Seems unlikely. The "Remington No. 2" was the first commercially successful typewriter made by Sholes and Glidden ca. early 1890's. "The First Typewriter" by Darryl Rehr http://home.earthlink.net/~dcrehr/firsttw.html Also, this first typewriter typed in caps only. So, here are the two words in all caps: H A E MOPTYSIS N A C MOPTYSIS The document's age could blur these letters, in any assortment of capitalization. I hope this helps or at least provides some amusement! -- mother |
