commercial for Lincoln/Mercury cars.It was played on Fri.night on
Dateline NBC during the 9:00-10:00 hour.

Have you tried contacting the Lincoln/Mercury manufacturers?
They should be able to either answer the question or direct you to
their advertising agency. The advertising agency should have the
details of the song, as they would have had to pay royalties to the
song owners/artists in order to use it for the campaign.

I know that Lincoln sometimes uses "Bird's Lament" by Louis Hardin,
a.k.a. Moondog. There's a sample here:
