Question ID: 347041
I live on a remote Pacific island and call a dialup ISP in Paso
Robles, California (area code 805) for Internet access. Because the
phone system here uses a satellite, I pay 7 cents a minute. Because I
play an online game 20+ hours a week, the cost adds up.

There is a feature built into Windows XP dialup called Callback. Here
is what happens when both the ISP dialer and the ISP enable Callback:
The dialer connects with the ISP, the dialer and ISP handshake, the
ISP hangs up, and the ISP calls the dialer back. This way the dialer
avoids the cost of an outgoing call.

This would work great for me, since incoming calls are free on this
island. The problem is that I can't find an ISP that supports callback
- none that I've talked to have even heard of it.

My question is this: what ISP with a presence in the 805 area code
supports callback? Ideally, there would be no additional charge for
this. I have an 805 area code myself, so there shouldn't be.

Using satellite will necessarily be more expensive and I seriously
doubt if any ISP would ordinarily provide you with Callback using this
medium.

If you're going to be online for that length of time, it may be an
idea to look into broadband solutions (if available).

I am sure that there are broadband (satellite) internet providers out
there, and the costs of setting that up may well be cheaper than
trying to dial-up overseas every week (especially for 20hrs @ 7c per
min = $82).

Alternately you could always stick with Solitaire or something. That's
even cheaper...

There would be no additional expense for the ISP to call me back
because I am in the 805 area code.

There is no broadband here, and I would probably be thrown in jail if
I set up a satellite dish.
