Hello Google Answers,

My father is going to be 80 on June 18th this year.

My question is related more to UK events.

What happend on June 18th 1924?

Significant Global News
UK News
Local News for Northampton England

Also: what should we do or buy him to celebrate his Birthday?

Would you accept just significant global and UK news? Significant
local news for Northampton is pretty scarce for that date.

Yes - but is it also possible to tell my how I would find 1924 local news offline?

If your father is fond of cricket, perhaps this event will have
significance for him.

"Northamptonshire v Nottinghamshire - County Championship 1924 -
County Ground, Northampton on 18,19,20 June 1924 (3-day match)"
Cricket Archive
http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Scorecards/f/10/f10662.html

In that case, you could purchase a cricket-related item.

If you think this is a good idea, please let me know, so that I may
post it as an answer.

This may be of limited interest, since the source is a US newspsper,
but at this site:

http://store.yahoo.com/comthree/yourhisnew.html

they sell full copies (not just front pages) of newspapers from any
date you provide them. You could order your dad a full copy of a June
18, 1924 newspaper.

Just a thought...! Make sure to tell him we wish him a Happy Birthday.

proposed the question in Google Answers specifically because I was
having difficulty in finding relevant UK information from UK sources.

US / Global information is quite easy to find. UK, and Northampton
information is a lot harder. Hence ask the google answers experts.

The kind of thing I?m looking for is:

What was the weather like in the UK or Northampton?
Who was at the top of the UK football league?
Is there any reference in Hansard for this day?
What were the Kings engagements on this day?
What were the Time headlines?
Were there any major local announcements?
Also born on this day?

Fair enough.

Here's a service that provides actual major UK newspapers (e.g. The
Times) for the date requested:

http://www.newspapersremembered.co.uk/

I think that would be a fine gift for your dad, and would provide lots
of the information you're looking for as well.

The most important event in the World, in the UK and in Northampton on
18 June 1924 was, without doubt, the birth of your father.

The runner-up which came a very poor second was:

So, what to do to celebrate?

Well, why not buy him a new pair of shoes?

Because, 80 years ago, Northampton used to be famous for its shoe making.

Also bring in a huge cake out of which jumps Debbie Reynolds singing
'When there's a shine on your shoes'.

And then a troupe of 24 male dancers in top hat, white tie and tails
appear magically from behind a curtain, to accompany her.

He will never have expected anything like this and he'll love it!

Well?

The Northampton Public Library would be a very good place to start for
an off-line source, if it's within your easy reach.

Public Libraries often have copies of local newspapers, etc. going way back.

Most UK Libraries that I'm familiar with also have microfilm copies of the Times.

For National Newspapers, the British Newspaper Library at Collingdale
(North London) is a great place.

It depends where you are located.

I bought someone the Times for their birthday....then he pointed out
that it actually told him everything that had happened the day before.
:)

So, my advice is, buy the next days one as well.
