The story's told that, years ago, the Russians bugged the American Embassy in Moscow, using microwave beams, and that all the employees there at the time finished up with health problems. |

The FDA = Federal Drug Administration and the FCC = Federal Communications Commision and some other agencies have taken a stand at .05 watts per square centimeter = 50 watts per square meter at times in the past. 50 watts is about ten times the power of a transmitting cell phone. Evidence of harm at that level was not compelling and international pressure has doubled the "safe" amount to 1/10 watt per square cm. If the cellphone antenna is touching your skin, this amount of power is typically delivered up to 2 centimeters below the skin surface, however non-using persons including your baby are rarely within 2 cm of your cell phone antenna. If you want to be extra safe keep the cellphone at least 10 cm = 4 inches away from you and the baby's body. This keeps exposure well below the old standard even for the skin surface. Statistical studies (without careful controls) indicate a moderate increase in brain tumors amoung long time heavy cell phone users and others exposed frequently to micro waves of moderate strength. Low level, infrequent exposure seems to cause no harm. 10,000 watts per square meter = one watt per square centimeter is know to do damage, but that is ten times the present "safe" level. The radiation from cellphones is negligible while they are on standby weiting for a call = perhaps one millionth of a watt per square centmeter. Sorry this is from memory, so I have no links. Neil |

Thank you, Neil, for the encouraging comment, which more or less confirms what I suspected. My son is shortly to become a father for the first time and was concerned by this aspect of living in an increasingly "wireless* society. I may be wrong in the other conclusion I have drawn, which is that the absence of an official answer is an indication that the evidence I asked for must be pretty thin on the ground |
