what are the known copy protection methods for DVD+-RW (recordable media) ? I found out about CPRM for DVD-RW and "Vidi" for DVD+RW , my question is how much are those methods are supported or expected to be supported by DVD players/recorders ? for example if i make a dvd movie on DVD-RW and protect it with CPRM , how many DVD-recorders will be able to read it (and how many players) ? Also the same question about the "Vidi" system for DVD+RW ? obviously there will be some standard in the future for such copy protection to enable recording of Pay-TV movies. Is there any other standard in the horizon for Recordable-media copy protection ? another related question is about the new DVD+-VR format . how well is it the choise for DVD recoders as "recording format" ? i mean what presentage of DVD recorders support that format and combine it with copy protection (CPRM/ViDi) ? what is the forecast for these things ? |

Since it may take more than a few minutes, or even hours to correctly research this question, I suggest that you consider increasing your price, or reducing the complexity of your question. A researcher gets 75% of the listed price and $2.00 is a lower price for what could be an hour or 2 of work. The only "universal" DVD copy protection system (guaranteed to work with all players) is CSS, but it cannot be applied to recordable DVDs, due to the smaller sector size (CSS requires sectors with 2053 bytes, recordable DVD sectors have 2048 bytes). Nearly all current set-top DVD recorders support CPRM and DVD-VR. In fact, both are closely related. If a broadcast is protected by CPRM, you'll only be able to record it in DVD-VR mode (and will then be unable to copy that recording). It seems that many players are incompatible with CPRM, however, so it might not be a very good idea to use use CPRM for distribution. This page has a list of players, and includes information about some of the models' (in)compatibility with CPRM: http://www.rwppi.com/compati/ This site has information about the various copy protection formats: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,55187,00.asp Pioneer's page for the DVR-7000 only mentions support for DVD-RW discs in DVD-VR mode, and warns about incompatibility with some players, but doesn't give any idea of numbers ("CPRM recordings can only be made on CPRM compliant DVD-RW discs formatted in Video Recording (VR) Mode, and CPRM recordings can only be played on players that are specifically compatible with CPRM."): http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/home_entertainment/dvdplayersandrecorders/DVDRecorder-DVR-7000.html In the end, anything that can be played back can be copied (either using a digital decrypter or by re-digitising the analog output). |
